"Ban on rerun of eggs TV advert"

So it's official, we now live in an utterly barking Alice's Wonderland.
Coming up to election times we always here how the two main parties are
going to de-centralise and take a "lighter touch" on society.

    *Snort* yeah right.

'British Egg Information Service spokesperson Amanda Cryer said: "We
have been shocked by this ruling as eggs are a healthy, natural food
    which are recommended by nutritionists."

"What's more, there are no restrictions on the number of eggs people
can eat, which was recently confirmed by the Food Standards Agency, and
between five and seven eggs a week would be totally acceptable for most
    people." '

That's not what my doctor or any of the high cholesterol information
    sheets say.

Only yesterday I was told by the doc; "20mg of Simvastatin a day and no more
than 3 eggs per week", this along with all the other advice, but luckily he
didn't mention curry, beer, or black pudding... phew!

Well, if "most people" have high cholesterol, then I see your point.

I do, I gave up on my 2 eggs a day diet a year ago and take atorvastatin
since becoming diabetic. That doeasn't make eggs a bad food, just not
right for oddities like me. As the article highlighted, many things
which can be bad in excess are advertised.

I'd take issue with the UK Gov/NHS recommended healthy diet anyway.
Frankly it's utterly outdated and complete bollocks. Dangerous in fact
    for many people.

It still doesn't make you "most people" though, as was quoted in the
    original article.
I suspect on the back of this that some people will now change from a
two egg breakfast to Frosties, or some such sugar & calorie-laden
    cereal with full fat milk.

Most people over the age of 45 do - 70% of them. I don't know the
figure for the population as a whole, but as people under 30 are very
unlikely to have theirs tested, I'd say it's fairly likely that 'most
people' who are tested do indeed have high cholesterol.

Even if the figure's less than 50%, it's still a very significant
number, which Amanda Cryer seems to conveniently ignore. I know her job
is to promote eggs regardless, but the ban on the advert isn't as dumb
as it first appears imo. That doesn't mean other products aren't more
deserving of an advertising ban of course - especially nappies[1].

[1] I hope Pampers go bust with all their talk of 'soft poo' while I'm
trying to eat my dinner. And air fresheners accompanied by footage of
kids on toilets doing particularly smelly dumps.

That's taking a very broad view of "high". And also largely ignoring
other health factors. Now if you were to use the term "at risk from"
in front of "high" you'd get a very much lower figure.
Unfortunately it's the health industry who are very much ignoring the
fact that most people with "high" cholesterol are not put at any
significant risk by it - the problem is that it's very difficult to
identify the risk, so they're tending towards a broad-brush approach,
where they treat everyone over a certain level the same.

  14. Strangely enough I don't[1]. One of the few good bits of genetics I
    managed to aquire!

Before the diabetes by cholesterol was tested at 3.1 - since it's crept
up to a massive 3.5. And the triglycerides are similarly low.

Which is why I don't bother with the simvastatin that the GP initally
    tried to make me take..

  15. You too eh?

Whiskas kitten food seems to do it every time. We have given up buying
it now. Felix kitten food seems much better (in terms of the
    healthiness of the output anyway).

  16. See now this is bollox, the figures actually do not say this, what they
do say is that the norm for cholesterol rises with age.

Agreed ^2. Funny how people object to explicit sex on television, and
yet are content to watch some cute 4-yr-old sitting on a bog squeezing
out a big one. It's the closest I get to Disgusted of Tunbridge
Wells, when I throw things at the TV, leave the room etc.

  20. A quote from bupa regarding health care?? A bit like asking a bloke if
all wimmin are shaggable. It is a rather piss poor interpretation to
scare folks into buying their stuff. Even Champs could work out that it
is plainly obvious that the norm for cholesterol levels rise with age
and that including the unreasonably low figures from younger folks in
the sales pitch only distorts the truth of the matter. Look at what Ace
say, it doesn't seem to matter that much, provided it is not excessive.
