now I think we're getting closer to the truth.

  3. Indeed. And, from what I've seen in this thread, if you
think it's overpriced, you don't *need* it (as opposed
to reading the latest compu-jorno-fest and deciding
    that's what I *want*)

I've been involved in PCB design here at work. The software
we use is CADstar and, once you've learnt to use it, it is
fantastic. No idea what it costs, but I'm guessing it's in the
Adobe range. But there is a good deal of electronics knowledge
gone into it, which hasn't gone into the free stuff.

(and also *need* is probably replaced by *run at decent speed*)

By then I'll have got rid of the only paid-for software I use.

no. I, personally have had software "stolen" from me, in the form of
being fucked around for a client who didn't end up paying for some of
the code I developed for them.
It's funny how people keep mentioning MS in this thread. I wasn't
thinking of large corporate software producers when I asked the
    question that started this thread.

I still think there's a difference between (media) file sharing and
    software piracy.

    * availability of older material (though I guess this might also apply
to the likes of MAME etc.)
    * the "try before you buy" approach - I think a lot of people who
download MP3s either delete them if they don't like them, or buy the
CD equivalent - I doubt many software pirates do this

I was assuming we were discussing the general case and not the
particular. In your case it was the same (apparently) as any other
consultancy where the client doesn't cough up be it IT or building work.

Well if you'd been more specific...

don't really agree - as long as you've got at least a Gig of memory
and Photoshop's scratch area not on the primary volume of your
machine, it runs quite happily on something as crap as my PIII-800.

Which reminds me, I must find out when Microsoft are going to put all
their 2003 products in the "action pack", it's about time I reskilled in
    something 'new'.

Plus a lot of the stuff I enjoy (1970s
Canterbury Prog) isn't available to buy any more. And the only source
    for it is MP3s..

I play a few games on my pc, and find that if when I download them,
and play them....enjoy them....I go and buy them.

I got mugged when I bought GP3...hated it. Downloaded GP4...found it
to be a pile of poo and therefore did NOT buy it.

    Thank god for EMule....

I think you're simply displaying your own particular brand of
    hypocrisy.
I doubt many music downloaders do either, although it might be nice to
    think that they did. And CD copying - now that's just plain bad :-}

  15. This is where you have the advantage of me[1]. I don't know
    a) the price of Photoshop
    b) the price of hardware
    c) the basic requirements that you've just outlined above.

So, as you can see, I was talking from a position of
    some ignorance.

[1] I was tempted to put "sirrah" here...

Ah. As you were. We had a look a profssional large format printers
and decided that it was better to get someone else to do it for the
kind of volumes that we do.
Well, it was about 4.5K for the printer we were looking at.....

er, I'm just making a copy to play in the car. Is that ok?

now, would you like to borrow it?

    Champ, Oct 21, 2003
  20. This comes under "fair use" iirc.
but this doesn't. It comes under "unauthorized lending/borrowing"
