Colin Irvine : If ones job involves designing software, there will be plenty of times when you need to - for want of a more eloquent phrase - let things settle in your head. I'll generally go for a coffee and a chat, or browse the tech news or sit back and close my eyes for a while.
I thought that the current direction of developments were to stop people being able to copy stuff they weren't supposed to. Still unlikely to stand up in court and nut you in the face though. -- Muck Bandit 600n(With added ducktape); CG125(MSOHPR) "I've got a CG125, and I'm not affraid to use it." But... how big's the market for Autocad compared to, say, MS Project? If they're only going to sell xx,000 copies the whole of the development, maintenance etc. is going to have to be amortized across xx,000 copies rather than xx,000,000 in the case of a more popular software package.
simonk : Depends where you live, and what you are doing with your copies. Currently "in the course of business" will land you in a criminal court in England. In a number of other countries, any copyright infringement can land you with a criminal case.
You are not stealing the intangible. You are infringing the copyright. To steal it, you would have to take it away from the owner. Having said that, i don't copy software or content without permission or license.
Well firstly I'd suggest it's stealing from a faceless corporation rather than an individual; all software houses are huge, aren't they... secondly I'd suggest that many people don't see the value in IPR or copyright as such, they can see the value in materials but not in the design or investment of time, as you said intangible thirdly I'd suspect that many people know it's wrong but simply don't give a **** because of the likes of microsoft being perceived as taking the piss by selling software for high prices. None of this is defense mind. AFAIK I'm not running any illegal software at home[1] (or work). Of course since I've bought a fair amount of it from computer fairs it's OEM stuff so since I didn't buy it with a PC I probably don't have a legitimate license. [1] A slight lie... I've two windows boxes one of which hardly ever gets used (switched it on last about 3 months ago) loaded with the same copy of windows 98.
I couldn't agree more - it applies to many cerebral jobs. I'll get on with something else that doesn't require much concentration, or browse a journal, maybe check what's new on a few NHS websites. Or, as you say, shut my eyes for a minute or two. If I do something, however, it'll mostly be work related. The odd minute or two doing something private is one thing, otherwise we're talking of goofing off - and that, IMHO, is theft - pure and simple. In my case it'd be theft of the tax on your hard-won pay.
I don't see it. Any argument you can apply for infringing the copyright of say a music producer applies equally to software, anything else is just rationalisation.
simonk wrote He has prolly not used it in serious combat then. 2/3 keystrokes at most for the basics. Provided you have half a clue what you are doing it really is a piece of piss to use and has got enough bells and whistles to keep arty farty types confused for years.
Why do you think this is a lot of money? Even as a one person business it should pay for itself very quickly and is considerably less expensive than your wages. [1] [1] Either that, or you weren't charging enough ;-) [2] [2] Oh, and the consumables, don't forget them. Heh.
Pah. The stuff we do starts at about 50k + 25% maitenance. That would be for a single license. I'd say the average would be half a million per client. Or in a vertical market.
I don't think it was a lot of money. Take a look up there ^^^^^. SteveH suggests, "you could easily blow the thick end of £10k on equipment and software"... Darsy replies, "I think you're exagerating by quite a large margin." I respond, "Cost me the best part of 5k just for two printers". My point was not "It's a lot of money", it was, "I don't think SteveH is exaggerating the cost"
