If I'm ever in the (admittedly unlikely) position of being you, it shall
    do me some genuine harm.

    Dunno about hypocritical. Selfish, certainly.

I was under the impression that Office (maybe not stand-alone Word) could be
installed on two computers, as long as you own both computers. I think this
is true for the Retail version, don't know about the OEM version.

I'd doubt it, but I'll check the ULA this evening.

Hmmmm, I dunno. Cost me the best part of 5k just for two printers and
associated kit to run them when I was doing graphic design stuff.

Don't even get me started on the PosterJet and A0 encapsulator I *wanted*
    :)

    Exactly.

Was looking at it from the point of view of needing 2 reasonably specced
machines (preferably Macs, with one being a Powerbook), decent colour
and mono laser printers, scanner, transparency scanner, Photoshop,
Illustrator, Office V.x etc. It soon adds up.
    Heh.

  10. I agree with that, although the movie companies will always
be able to market shite - they'll just carry on selling
    it to Sky.

I was under the impression that it was ok as long as only one instance was
being used at any one time. Certainly had this with some M$ stuff on Macs
when I used them. Same serial number on 10 machines, but if you fired up a
copy whilst running it on another machine on the network, it refused to
    start.

Had the desired effect. We bought more licences when the inconvenience
    outweighed the cost...

From the list up there it sounds like you're trying to produce a
    magazine!

As a startup you'd realisticly get by with less kit until you've built a
customer base that necessitates (and covers the costs of) upgrades, or
software to provide a specific service. Personally I'd not consider
buying any kit until I'd cost justified it and looked at a few
alternatives. As an example, on a small run it's generally cheaper to
farm bulk printing off to a local reprographics place than buy an
    expensive printer.

What business do you feel needs that kind of kit anyhow?

That's just looking at what the local photocopy / graphic design shop
has access to round the corner from where I work.

Yes, you can do it cheaper, by not purchasing the printers, but you're
still looking at over £5k for machines and software.

Oh , they would I'm sure , but there are also people who would *never* have
bought a program no matter what.
A 15 year old kid who downloaded photoshop would never have put his hand in
his pocket for the full 650 quid asking price so Adobe have lost no income
    there.

It would not be the first time that some have done this with software
from several different companys then brought the most suitable
    product.

    Same with software:)

Hmm bit of an over-saturated market anyhow. "niche" is the way forward
as a startup, I reckon, or at least come up with something that's very
    different from the competition.

Or pray for a real skills shortage in something you know lots about.

I tried that, but there doesn't seem to be a market for serial masturbation
    involving fat blokes...

Although Darsy may know differently :)

Yeah, I know. It was just a thought as she has a couple of Graphic
Design qualifications, and it seems a waste not to use them.... proper
jobs in Graphic Design seem to be hard to come by.

Heh..... she's qualified in more things than I can remember, but they
all seem to be in areas where it's very hard to break in unless you're
going to work on a freelance basis. (C&G in Photography springs to mind.
'Staff photographer' positions on local rags. seem particularly hard to
    come by).
