Hardware is cheap. People cost money.

An organization isn't likely to punch your face in if it discovers you've
nicked its software, an individual is, when they've discovered that you've
    nicked their wheels.

Yebbut you use that professionally so you need all the latest bells and
whistles plus you have the confidence of bought and paid for factory
support if you ever get really stuck. Throw in the tax benefits and it
is hardly surprising that in your mind it makes perfectly good sense to
    pay for the stuff.

A different story for games, music, videos and the like, I am sure.

err, yes. All my PCs cost less than Photoshop's retail.
I think you're exagerating by quite a large margin, if you're talking
about a "working from home" set-up.
One of the most expensive pieces of software which I actually bought
was Dreamweaver. It paid for itself in less than a month.

That doesn't even come _close_ to what Photoshop can do.

Even Photoshop LE wipes the floor with GIMP.

On most business systems the cost of the software is far greater than the
    cost of the hardware.

For what it's worth I can't think of any unlicensed software I use. All the
PC stuff I need came with the PC's when I bought them apart from mIRC,
which I purchased, and my Alpha's run hobbyist type licenses.

Having said that if I did need some expensive software and could get hold
of a pirated copy I'd be very tempted to use it much as it would go against
the grain. Money is a great bender of morals.

single-user "developer" licences are usually very cheap or free for
    enterprise software, no?

Like the man said, it is the people who cost the money. Ditch the
expensive bitch and get yerself a Philippino one in.

So it reflects in your costs. The choice is yours. Either: you provide
your clients with a superior service and improved end product at a
marginally higher cost or you sell shit to cheapskates for bugger all.

Same here - everything either came with the machine or was bought from
Apple. It did hurt to buy Keynote, though. Seventy-five quid just to
knock up a few OHP presentations.
I think that would generally apply to most home users, though.

There's times when you really want to do something that can only be done
with a piece of s/w costing several hundred quid. But you don't need to
do it often enough to justify the cost of buying, IYSWIM.

Indeed, OpenVMS along with licenses for loads of compilers and stuff is
free; the complete Oracle product suite was 160USD IIRC on an OTN license.

If I had to fork out 5-600 quid for some software just to have a play about
with I could be tempted to use an unlicensed version even though I know
that a lot of time and money has gone into it.

And yes that probably makes me a hypocrite.

    good point. Here:

    [3] I'm currently - temporarily - running a copy of Word
double-installed on a single licence - a technical infringement, given
that the HD one of the installed copies of Word is on is not currently
    in a computer.

that sort of price though, you're talking about professional rather
than home or enterprise software. i.e. Photoshop, Fireworks,
Dreamweaver etc. etc. Generally speaking, anyone needing to buy a
product like this would already be familiar with it from a previous
    (probably at work) context.
    aren't we all, though.
