    Mr Derision I reckon.

Can someone follow up to this so I get past the dull ****'s kill file?

Hang it, I'll change my posting name just this once.

Good to know. I express myself well when pissed. The bullshit level's
about the same as when I'm sober, though.

    M J Carley :
You're not trying hard enough. Actually, anyone using fvwm2 obviously
isn't doing much work on the machine...

Yes, once he'd switched it off/on and waited for the disk scanning to
finish, and then re-did the fsck by hand because there were errors that
    it wouldn't do automatically.

On a lighter note, it took me 3 hours to get two different versions of
Java running side by side today. Well, two hours to get them running,
and an hour to put the critical OS libs into a state that would allow
everything else to run properly. Stupid, stupid, *stupid* library
incompatibilities - what kind of wanker changes the way vprintf
    works between libc6 versions?

    M J Carley :
It's not particularly stable and reliable on laptops, not laptops
without APM support, only ACPI, anyway.

Yes, there is some great open source software around, and even some
good GUI based OSS, but most of it isn't good enough to pay for. Heh,
actually, it reminds me of that bit in The Mote In God's Eye, where the
"mechanic's assistant" class of alien make a ship unusable through
    constant, unchecked, improvement.

Mozilla is, as always, my favourite example of this. Although after
today libc might take over, or maybe the kernel socket headers...

I've not managed to get either to work on my Compaq Armada (PIII) under
    SUSE 8.2.

But I haven't much of a clue in this department.

Still struggling? Me too. However, since this last came up, I've managed
to get my Compaq Evo 410c to (for the most part) behave under SuSE8.2 by
issuing the ACPI "toggles" at the point of booting.

I just run Windows on my (desk|lap)top and leave Unix to the
servers at work. It's much much easier.

Jeezus Christ, talking to you guys is like mentioning that you once rode
the 8:15 from Acton to Richmond to a fucking train spotter. I hate HP-UX
because I have to deal with it every day.

    Mr Precision Guest

Standard HP-UX needs downtime for kernel parameter changes, filesystem
modifications so shouldn't be used where downtime is *not* an option, try
AIX instead. Or pay a fortune for add on features which are standard
elsewhere. I think you'll find the HP-UX admins in at 2am and on Saturdays
to take the systems offline, unlike their AIX and even Linux bretheren.
    It shows.
