I wouldn't really know about back of a fagpacket solutions, most of the
systems I work with are quite large.

What a load of shite. You obviously don't work in the commercial IT
    arena.

Red Hat is the nearest thing in the Linux world to MS and I hate it,
    as do others

    http://www.rumble.net/redhatsucks.html

I was obliged to install it recently because it was the only readily
available set of disks which had drivers for the SCSI in the new box
and I found it had an `upgraded' kernel with alpha-test features which
meant that the data acquisition library couldn't be installed which
meant I had to find a vanilla kernel and install that instead.

Slackware's very good on the other hand.

So don't use them. You have a choice of window managers under Linux,
    unlike MS.

    Des Coughlan :

"unix is the way forward because a user can't do any damage" is only
true of systems run by a competent sys-admin. Unless M Carley is
suggesting that we take away everyones home PC and replace it with a
dumb terminal, his was statement did not have the value 'true'.
There are a variety of ways in which a user can temporarily (fork
bomb) or permanently (installing stuff as root) screw up a *nix OS.

But you generally have to work at cocking up a Unix box. You can't,
for example, delete system files by accident. And they don't get
    viruses.

I think you'll find there are actually other window managers under MS.
There are certainly different UIs. They are not as easy to swap
    between though IME

Only if you're a numpty, and find things like doing up your shoe laces hard.

even if it were only a hundrew, your statement "they [unix] don't get
    viruses" is clearly false.

I got confused with flip flops, didn't know which side the toes go.
And I'm not allowed wellies since the incident.

    M J Carley :
I don't think I've managed to delete a windows system file by accident.

Anyway, so *nix is the way forward right up until Bill adds the 'protect
system from numpty' option to windows is it?
