Have you come across the Baen Free Library? Said SF publisher experimented with putting complete novels on their site, in easily useable formats, at no charge. The authors whose work has been made available have seen their royalties increase significantly. There's a sort of editorial thing there as well, mostly with articles about their experiment and copyright generally which makes quite interesting reading. Some articles from musicians, also.
There are some practical differences: if I download a piece of music which I like I am then more likely to buy other work by the same artist(s). That's clearly not very likely with software. However, it's actually quite difficult to see what the difference is: I'd be taking someone's intellectual property for my own use in both cases. Perhaps the problem lies with the type of legal protection available. Copyright laws were introduced for the benefit of the consumer: to encourage artists - primarily writers initially - to produce more work. That's fairly straightforward, although publishers are trying to subvert the original intent. Software gets covered by copyright - in the UK - because it was a convenient body of existing law. But that model doesn't really work very well except, perhaps, for various types of Free software.
erm, sometimes it is. I'm starting to take notice of which games companies produce games I Like, and so will head towards those in future...

even our dyslexic, dyspraxic, statemented 10 year old can string sentences together better than the above. Having said that, I must say I laughed when I noticed he has a little excercise book with "Speeling Book" written on the front of it.
ever considered going on an "English as a Second Language" course? I /think/ I know what you mean, but it's a struggle. not me, for sure.
he has been issued a "statement of special educational needs" by the local education authority. Basically just means he gets some extra help at school. He's not nearly as bad as what I wrote above might make you think. He's only got some "issues" with explaining in words what's going on in his head. And he's actually pretty good at speeling.
