the moral compass

  1. I'm shocked that as a railway employee you can seemingly (I can't tell
if this is a joke or not) condone fraud against the railway (fare
    evasion).

Do you condone shoplifting from Sainsburys and Tescos?

    William Grainger :
No concept of that in this country, that's American law.

There are exemptions in law for academia & critical review, and
probably a few other things, but copyright does not allow you
to make copies for personal use unless given permission by
    the holder.

    It's all in here:

And all your free software will be made illegal by software patents,
and all the new hardware will be DRMed and refuse to work because it
doesn't recognise the drivers, and they'll probably just outlaw it
anyway because the gov can't put the mandatory key/website/email
logging stuff in it, and even thinking about using some software
that hasn't cost you money will be enough to have you shipped off
    to a concentration camp.

    So there.

It was a comparison [1] between fare evasion and software evasion. Many
see 'getting away with it' on, say, South Central as acceptable (as they
also would using MS illegally) but evading on the nice little Bluebell as
unacceptable as would ripping off the "little man" like gravity.

On many occasions I sympathise with the punters as delivery of service
doesn't match its price. I also find myself shrugging and seeing evasion
as inevitable because of de-staffing and under investment in effective
    equipment.

But to answer the question, no I don't condone fare evasion per se as it
deprives the industry, and the society it serves, a tier of its funding.
Which could be utilised in expansion, upgrading etc. etc.
    Another question altogether, yes.

Aye, I've got a 60 grand IBM AIX machine sat under my desk :)

Quad processors and 8Gb of memory rock a phat one.

    <fx narrow eyes>

    how did you know that?

And it wasn't just games - I made a fucking mint as a 14 year old with
my 4k Eprom that allowed the Acorn Atom to combine text and graphics
    mode at the same time.
    I'd laugh.

And then want some money ;-)

    applications

I enjoy calling people cunts to their face.

Especially in business meetings were you've never met them before - it
    really freaks them out.

TBH, I have a problem doing this.

Before anyone starts on the inability to walk and chew gum, to me it's
just ill-mannered. I always end asking them to repeat some piece of
information which invariably they pick up as important and then repeat it
lots. Unfortunately it never is but their mate has told them they can
    sue for thousands....

I suppose it all depends on whose on the other end of the phone.

    "nearby"

as in, a completely different area of London?

Or do you mean you're having your leaving do in the vicinity of either
    EC1A or EN1?

    nice.

My current position is lead architect on a multiple-site (about 25 of
the fuckers at last count) CMS system, with more than 60 lusers in 8
countries running the back-end bits and bobs. There's loads of
workflow crap, workgroup hierarchy nonsense, 3rd and 4th party
datafeeds, internal and external peer review publishing crapo, the
    lot.

I've discovered that when people are getting into arguments about the
minutuae of how the back and front end systems should work, my saying
"for ****'s sake, it's only a website" really messes with their tiny
    marketing minds.
