More of a drunken stroll to the pub and back via a typewriter it seems.

Who would be stupid enough to leave Siberia for Nottingham anyway.

US gambling law flawed - Jowell

You couldn't make it up. About a bent as her estranged hubby I should
think, or just lining up her next job post election melt down.

    Interesting:
She added: "America should have learnt the lessons of prohibition. The
Volstead Act [which brought in prohibition in 1919] was meant to stop
alcohol from causing harm, but in practice it forced otherwise law-abiding
customers into the hands of the bootleggers."

I look forward in anticipation of HM Government decriminalising all
    prohibited drugs then...

    Quite. I really beggars belief.
This is one of the top female politicians in the ruling party. It's like
having Hilary Clinton for President. I hope some worthy jumps on it!

It was recommended by a mate of mine. He said it "changed his life"

I will never read it now.

    Sold well,

Ah ok. Hog didn't mention it in the original post and
Google has it down as a new thread, so I assumed
that it was just impeccable timing.

Not to worry, I'll go back to sleep now.

  10. I knew a bloke who said he was the grandson of the author. It's possible
he was bullshitting / or I may have picked him up wrongly, but the gist
of it was his grandad did that journey or one very much like it and I've
    no reason to doubt that.

From what I see, various Poles did similar journeys and that in itself
is enough to lend (some) veracity to his claims. It's entirely possible
the author didn't actually do all the stuff in the book and the book was
simply a collection of others' experiences - who knows now? Indeed, who
cares? I certainly don't (although I admit to a slight disappointment if
it's entirely fabricated) and if the story is simply read as a good
yarn, with the supposition that it happened to someone, somewhere, then
    it stands on its own.

There were many journeys undertaken during the course of WW2 and this is
not the strangest of them, by a long walk.

Grimly Curmudgeon () gurgled happily, sounding
much like they were saying :
The R4 bit interviewed some of the author's sprogs - who had never ever
mentioned it to their father or versa vice. It was the proverbial elephant
in the corner of the room.

(Gotta admit, I'd never heard of the book... <slinks off>)
