Guess I'm showing my age here but when I first went for my rider's licence
in NSW (pre indicator era)
we were required by law to give hand signals...kinda difficult to do without
removing a hand from the handlebar...must have been lucky then not to be
charged with neg riding?

Current law is "one hand on the handlebars at all times". Which is a
good thing as I have bikes that are legally sans indicators.

"Neg Driving" is a catchall but I believe is usually used when there's
a crash. "Not in control" is the one given as a Public Stupidity
offence.

always checks at the fitting.

That won't stick because it's legal to take one hand off the handlebars
while riding. Neg riding might stick because he was doing something
with his hand which may distract him from his riding.
