The Last Hurrah: PAKISTAN

  1. Following is a rather delightful video of two venerable
gentlemen's travels on old thumpers. Particularly
interesting was the repair in Pakistan of a broken front fork
    tube.

    | The Last Hurrah: PAKISTAN
    |
    | Des Molloy and Dick Huurdeman ride old single-banger
    | British bikes half way across the world through some of the
    | most difficult and remote terrain imaginable. Des's son
    | Steve joined this intrepid pair as cameraman and general
    | factotum for the highs and lows of an incident-packed
    | three-month trek from Beijing to Arnhem on 'Penelope', a
    | 1965 Yorkshire-made 650cc Panther, and 'Dutch Courage', a
    | 1954 Norton 600. The route took them across the
    | Northern-most of the Old Silk Roads over the roof of the
    | world through China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, the
    | burning deserts in Iran, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Germany and
    | finally to Arnhem in Holland - over 10,000 miles. They did
    | the last 3000 miles in about a week riding up to 12 hours a
    | day! The journey was traumatic as it was inspiring! Was
    | this idiocy or odyssey? Decide for yourself as you watch
    | their adventures and misadventures.

  2. I've just come back from Lahore. The only place you can see a mule and
cart in line with a Ferrari at the traffic lights :) I've also spent a
bit of time in Islamabdad. A much cleaner city than Lahore. Luckily
enough we have been able to get the locals to sort out Karachi.

Nice clip, have you seen the entire film / documentary? I liked the
    Long Way Round series.
My imagined trip around the world on a bike will take place in about 20
years after the kids have grown. I'd like to see the entire film to see
how these older guys handle the challenges of the trip. Besides, it
seems that Ill watch just about anything that has a motorcycle in it.

  4. Personally I have not seen the other films. Such a trip
sounds intriguing though. There was a woman who did some
extended touring in China. She had some interesting pictures
to post and an interesting travel log. You don't see those
type sceneries often. If I were to do something like that, I
think I would prefer somewhere in the Orient instead, like
    China.

  5. I've found out that once you get past the cultural
idiosyncrasies, people overall have the same basic wants,
desires, needs. I remember in Philippines seeing a kalesa
(horse drawn cart) amidst decorated motorcycles with sidecars,
and Jeepneys, and a Mercedez Benz. Then seeing a police
motorcade escorted limousine with Philippine flags on each
    fender.

Visiting Pakistan would be an interesting adventure.

And when a horse has a heart attack and pegs it in the middle of the
    road with cart attached

.... it still causes as much traffic chaos as the Merc
