Bugger. I'm not looking forward to it. It's pissing down and I've got a
new back tyre on, which I've not had chance to scrub in.

Oh don't be so ginger beer. Couple of careful miles and all will be well.

Heh, well it was okay after all. The roads were nearly empty what with
it being a (cancelled [1]) bank holiday.

[1] The guvvernment declared this to now be a working day, to pay for
the pensions of old people. Otherwise it would have been the 4th bank
    holiday in May, FFS.

I remember well the trip from the Black Horse up to Oulton Park in a
gale and horizontal hammering rain on a new pair of Avons on the RF.

Near-diagonal progress on a concrete-surfaced overbridge at the ton in
standing water is always guaranteed to be excellent sphincter
    exercise.
    That's a nice change.

Luckily, as there was very little traffic, I was exempt from sphincter
    clenching exercises today.
    Just noticed?

Snap. Though on reflection I note it has at least two omissions that I
    have come across:
    Merlut = ??
Loupe (de mer) = Sea bass (Roccus labrax). I see they have this as 'Bar'

Honestly. Ignore the fact the site is in Swedish, the "fish & product
dictionary" has a French section which gives English names.

Merlu is Hake apparently. I swear I have seen it on a menu with a 't'
    BTW.

Actually, to pay for Chirac and de Villepin's _humongous_ sodomizing of
    the French economy.

And they voted the same crowd in.

    Wonderful.

'Merlan', I suspect, which is 'merle', and the Germanic suffix '-an'.

Interestingly enough, 'merle' is a bird, and 'merlan' is a fish. I know
what the cunts look like, but I have no idea what they are in English.

Or perhaps it's 'merlu', which is related to the 'morue', which is
    'hake' in English, AFAIK.

A well-known expression in French is, 'faute de grives, on mange des
merles', which is roughly the same as 'any port in a storm', or perhaps,
'beggars can't be choosers'. Say you're trying to get into a bint's
knickers, and she's not exactly Miss World. A friend says, '**** me,
mate ... you can do better than that!', and you reply, 'faute de grives
....' The second half of the expression isn't even needed, such is the
    eloquence of the first part.

The word is ancient French from Latin (not surprisingly), meaning a
'brochette', or a sort of 'skewer'. Strangely enough, this fish is also
sold as 'colin', which I always thought was 'cod'. Still, not being a
great fish hand, I could be talking shite, for once.

Eh? I thought Loupe (de mer) was shark. At least that's what it's been
when I've bought it in Bordeaux.

  16. I alays thought it was loup de mer, anyway. A loupe being a magnifying
    glass.

    In communiqué
    <1hytv6r.gdjoew1qlpm7N%>, The
Excellent. It confirms my suspicion that the French seem to sometimes
have more than one name for the same fish (or different fish with the
same name), e.g. Loup de Mer appears against two seemingly completely
different species. Another case of a feral letter which a quick Google
reveals is not just an error on my part it seems.

I also really ought to get a 'Grigson's'.

See my follow-up to TOG, if you're interested. A 'loup de mer' is an
old sailor (literally 'sea wolf') whose time at sea has made him into a
solitary old fucker. The fish is called thus due to its apetite. Or at
least that's the view of _Le Petit Robert_.

Can't see the images at the moment. So what is it exactly?
Just another Bass (Roccus labrax) or the 'Rock Turbot/Sea Catfish'
    (Anarhichus lupus)[1]?

[1] Both listed as 'Loup de Mer' in the link TOG posted.
