Perhaps a Classic BMW is more to your liking?

I think GS and Moike quite appreciate them too! (....and I'm sure I recall
    Sharks participating)
    Sounds like "booth"!

So you can only get booked for 120-over instead of 160-over!

The falling-over I can handle Nick, it's the FLINGING that's the problem!

They're OK, but you can get a lot better bangs for bucks than that.
Besides the early ZZR6 is hardly a sports bike. The rebadged ZX6
version of the ZZR is a lot sportier and a lot lighter IIRC. The 636
however would be a better choice - and you can heli bar it if you want
    a more upright riding position.

For a tourer GSX750F goes for the same money and I'd consider it a
    better bike.

You can get plenty of 600 for 15K - that'll almost buy you a new one.
Even for half that the options are fairly wide open.

Heheh. Yeah "unlikely to leave me stranded" does leave it wide open.
You can get the Hyosung 650, the SV650, FZ6, ER6, Hornet 600 for around
or under the 11K ish mark new on road IIANM. So for the money you've
actually got a few options new. You could also get the GS500 but it's
not in the same league as the others.

Of course you can also get a lot of bike second hand for that too.

Build quality for starters, bloody 1200 shook itself to pieces. Secondly
lack of any real dealer support in NE/E/SE Melbourne. Looked promising
when a new Kawasaki only dealership opened just round the corner from my
work very soon after I bought the bike, but as I discovered, they had
even less interest in customer service than P-S... if that is possible.
Unlike lots of shops which run race-teams as a hobby, the Dealer that
opened in the SE subs in 2003 was a race team who treated customer
service like an after-work hobby. My favourite quote "It'll be ready
Monday, or Wednesday if the boys crash on the weekend"

Bods I know who have ridden it say it's a bloody good bike.

general consensus is "put an aftermarket shock on it if you are going
hooning but you will still come in well under the competition."
