That's it. I've been looking for an excuse to leave for weeks and
nothing reasonable came forth except it's like doing drugs. You just
    can't keep on doing it.

So for a while at least, I'm going to be a man of leisure.

Right, I'm off out to get beer.

I did the same about 2.5 years ago, then went on to do a degree and I've
just started my final year - then my 3 years of leisure will be over (unless
    I do a PhD).

    Waste your time wisely...

  7. Indeed. When I first started out in this game, I did it in the vans,
then onto (small) lorries and then back to vans again. Back the, I had a
hankering for doing what was then my HGV1. Many years later and life
stories that are too dull and over done to go into, I ended up doing the
job on a bike. I had an idea I wanted to do it as it seemed a bit
glamorous and had some sort of chic (ain't that always the way?)

Anyway, bikes, cars, lorries and motorbikes I've done. I've got
certificates for carrying dangerous loads, strapping old grannies into
wheelchairs in minibuses (same thing IYAM) and come a close second in
the despatcher of the year awards a couple of years back.

Driving big artics is something I wanted to do right from before the age
of being allowed to do it legally but then what else?[1] Apart from a 3
year stint in a dry cleaners, six months in a bakery and six months
    building semi-conductors, it's all I've ever done.

    [1] That's a rhetorical question.

If I'm ever in the unlikely position etc etc, I'll pop up to Stortford
    Bish and introduce myself.

  9. That's very nice of you, Ken. I'm touched by your warm and open
    invitation.

I feel a tie and shirt moment coming on. Got any part time work? I can
do 16 hours a week IIRC, without affecting any Job seekers allowance ;-)

    16 hours means no JSA.

Up to 15h 59m gets you JSA less [your earnings minus the relevant
    disregard].

I do apologise dear boy. I am, as you know, but a recent recruit to the
ranks of stinking capitalist fuckpig and I am still rather feeling my
    way.

See, I rather thought we were supposed to take that sort of thing in our
stride and pausing only tread down the odd mass here and then rush back
    in demanding more.

Plus they ask you to fill in some poxy working hours form every two
weeks, for ever after if you're working or not, and you only end up
seeing about a fiver of the money you earn every week.

  19. Gak! So if I earn more than 50 quid in a week, I have to give back the
JSA? No wonder people don't want to work, it's not bloody worth it.

I'd be interested to know how I can earn a few extra quid without it
affecting any income or is it a case of "give with one hand, take with
another". I really don't see the point of getting people back to work if
they've got the idea it'll cost 'em and they've been used to being
    layabouts for so long.

  20. I certainly intend to bugger all in the way of 9-5 for a few weeks
anyway. I might have to do a bit of graft come near Christmas though.
I never made it. I fell asleep in the bath ;-)
