  2. If it's that worn at 4,000km it'll never make it to 25,000km anyway...

Our chief accountant rides his pushbike to work each day wearing his
office clobber. He's in his late 50s, but doesn't raise a sweat at all,
except perhaps on 30 deg days. But then he doesn't have to ride as far
as your workmates - he's only got 15 kays each way...

Or when you order a hamburger with the lot it doesn't come with cheese.
You have to pay extra for that....

We had an older push bike fanatic at work up until about 2 years ago.
He rode to work, he rode here, he rode there.

He claimed never to raise a sweat either, but people were still
complaining he had BO (and he did). [1]

[1] want to ride to work? great... but expect to have to have a shower
and change when you get there if you smell (or expect to get bagged for
    being the stinky guy).

I always thought BMW riders smelt because of the Belstaff's and the
oldness... I never realised it was because they were Zombies!

It's a BMW.... But I suppose "Shaft drive bearings" doesn't
    quite have the same ring.

I've found my Suzuki XF650 Freewind to be perfect for Commuting.
I've dropped 2 teeth on the front sprocket so she now rides at an absolute
    max 135.
110 is comfortable in fifth on the big single. with some fairly good
acceleration. (good enough to get me along the M4 from Canada bay to
Silverwater, parramatta and North rocks, as all were placesI had to work
    while owning it.

It's got a widish seat, crappy suspension at the moment as it's done about
28,000 with me in just under a year. small windscreen deflects most of the
    water away from your body.

It was originally pitched as a road trail but you can fit road wheels (I
know one woman has, she owns two) and therein lies the only problem with the
freewinds. Owners with em always seem to keep them.
They ride nicely high for traffic use; Not a single mirror clipped even when
going 30-35 through stationary traffic on concord road as your approach the
    M4 entrance. C'mon Kwaki Z250, Moto Guzzi I don't know what, and GSXR750
fess up. I only started after weatching all three of you blast by!
At any rate BMWF650's which the XF is modeled on are also a good commuting
    bike, damn near bulletproof.

  19. I've found mine to be perfect for damn near everything, but then I'm
bloody biased. Mine has stock gearing which means I'm stuck in 3rd
around town at 50kph but can run comfortably at 140kph for prolonged
periods should conditions (i.e no Hwy Patrol) allow it. This means
it's a touch high for single track, but I can live with the compromise
since it's not working hard on the open stuff/bitumen and the bike was
never intended for single track anyway.

Seat is good for 1000+km days (dead sheep might extend this). My
suspension is shagged, I had to wind a ton of preload on the rear and
the compression dampening is one click off max so I'll be sending the
shock away for a regas/oil change one day. I've been trying to track
down some cartrigde emulators for the front forks with no luck so far.

As for wheels, I just change the tyres. Though it's very tempting to
have a second set of wheels that's a luxury I wont indulge myself with
at this stage. It's easy enough to do yourself with a set of levers
(provided you have the centre stand) or the bike shop lets me whizz the
wheels off in the workshop and then they fit the tyres with their
machine. The 19 inch front is a bit of a compromise but for dirt I run
a Metzler Karoo which has superb grip and so far outlasted a Maxxis
C6006 (very good and cheap!), Dunlop Trailwing and the first half of a
Pirelli MT21 on the rear. On the tar I'm running some Bridgestone dual
compound thingies. No complaints so far, they did the Snowy Ride last
year (4,000km round trip two up) and will likely go again this year.

    Cheers,
    Ash

I don't think we have any fines under three figures here.
