The Doctor Update (long-ish)

  1. First off, thanks for all the GWS messages, which I printed off and I
can hear her chortling over them right now.

Last night was well disturbing, when she passed out twice and it
transpired nobody had given her a head X-ray. Her helmet - well, you
    should see it....

So dial 999 and back to hospital - but it turned out it was just an
adverse reaction to the brand of painkillers. *Phew*.

So this morning, after the mortified gent who skittled her had pressed
25 quid into my mitts to repair the Benly[1], I phoned his insurance
company, and the converation went like this:

Me: "Um, hypothetically speaking, if I had a policy with you, and I had
a collision with another vehicle, and I paid him for the damage to his
    vehicle, where would I stand?"

Them: 'Oh dear. That would be a a clear admission of liability.'

Me: "GOOD!!!! BECAUSE THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOUR INSURED HAS JUST DONE!"

    Them: 'Oh dear.....'

And despite Carole Nash's pleading, I've said we are not claiming
through them. Not making a claim at all, in fact. Damage to Benly -
20/25 quid. Plus one totalled helmet and one cheapo pair of trousers.
And we have a ukp250 excess. So why do it?

She'll be off work for 2-3 weeks, and won't be able to drive a car for
maybe another month. So insurance claim includes minicab transport to
    and from work[2].

Nope, this is personal injury only, and our own solicitor, a
long-standing family friend and a *really* nasty litigator, is on the
    case.

The Doc went back to hospital today - cracked kneecap plus the usual
abrasions, some dental damage (again, you should see the helmet), but
thank the Lord, the reconstructive surgery on her knee ligaments, done
some years ago, looks unaffected. This was the real worry.

Look, thanks folks. I'm rather glad I popped back to ukrm when I did.
    Seriously, thanks for support.

[1] New fork shroud from Dave Silver, plus new fork seal - ukp14.50.
Bent crash bars - unbolt and throw away. Source aftermarket ones as and
    when.
[2] Being Doctor Murray at St. George's Hospital opens more doors than
    you might think.

That gives you *plenty* of time to service her car then ;)

    Hope she recovers swiftly.

  4. Like you didn't know before you made the call!?
Colour me not surprised about the nasty bit.
That possibility had crossed my mind. Still if you've got influence then
you should use it when you need to.

Glad the recovery path looks OK.

    GWS to the missus TOG.

Without wishing to sound like a Jonah, mrs spida got tipped off her
bike a while back and although seemingly not badly injured
subsequently, suffered from dizzy spells and vision problems. She had
an MRI scan etc which didn't show anything amiss but the problems got
steadily worse over the next few weeks.

Various visits to the GP resulted in a mis-diagnosis of 'Post
Traumatic Shock' or some such bollox and eventually I used my private
health insurance to get a consultant neurologist on the case.

It turned out that she had suffered a dissection of the corotid artery
(an area which had not been covered by the original scan) causing
small blood clots to be released into the brain every now and then
causing what were essentially a series of mini strokes.

A course of Wolfrin gave a quick cure to the symptoms and she's now
    made a full recovery.

As I say, I hope to God that in your case the hospital's diagnosis is
correct, but keep a close eye on the good lady - just in case.

  14. No - get the other bod's insurers to fork out for a minicab to carry her
to work and back. And anyway - small automatics are very rare and
    hilariously over-priced.

Why not get them to fork out for an automatic hire car? Surely better for

  20. Good idea. Ta. Will do.

Their insurance assessor is coming to view the Benly tomorrow - I don't
think they believe our statement that Anne was going very, very slowly
and that the damage to the bike is only 25 quids' worth.
