I swopped the engines over with one that I bought last weekend.
Everything went very well, no bolts stripped, no brackets broke and it
    fired up 2nd kick.

I did all the usual checks for tight bolts etc and adjusted cables and
tickover and took it for a short spin round the block. A mile away from
the house I stopped in a layby just to check things were OK and to make
sure the tickover was right after it had warmed up properly. Then I
noticed the oil burning on the exhaust, and the steady drip onto the
floor below the front of the engine. Took a quick shufty and spotted the
3 inch long crack in the lower crankcase right down by the front engine
    mounts.

    **** **** ****!

Looks like the muppet I bought the spares and engine from had hammered
the lower engine mounting bolt out and cracked the case. I'll have to
get the bugger welded now. Ar least I don't have to get the egine out to
    do it.

    It ran nicely enough though.

Why not use some of that epoxy based metal repair putty?

£5's worth from Halfrauds should cover it.
