I agree, the ATE brakes really need to be set up well to be effective but
are not a great set of brakes.

ATEs can work quite nicely, they just need to be set up properly.

Of course, proper setting up *does* include braided lines as well as
getting rid of that horrible remote master cylinder.

Moike (whose ATE equipped R100RS has been known to lift a back wheel
    when braked in anger[1])

    [1] OK, panic.

Maybe that's why I thought Boxer was rich enough not to be bothered by

Not rich but comfortable, when you dont drink or smoke you can spend a lot
    more on bikes.

Jeez, next you'll be telling us you avoid women as well.
Although, that WOULD explain the apparent surfeit of money and
    time ;-)

Don't Drink (not a lot anyway 1 stubby every 6 months is not really drinking
    is it?)
    Don't Smoke (anything ever)
And bad women have never had an intrest in me (to my eternal disapointment).

Definitely not drinking... I'd call it slight spilling.

It is shameful, although I have been known to have more than one or 2 beers
at the occasional rally, 4 being the upper limit these days.

At times crown largers have sat in my fridge from one christmas party to the
    next.
