The benefits of windproof gear.......

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Doesnotcompute, Nov 10, 2003.

  1. Some time ago I bought myself a lightweight Sprayway windstopper jacket.
Bloody brilliant for general wear etc.

This weekend I tried it on the outside of me leather jacket, a bit
nervous, cos it's £160 quids worth (replacement, I didn't pay that first
time) and I'd hate to have to replace it.

By jove did it make a difference. I also purchased a pair of windstopper
inner gloves and they saved my fingers from going numb. Overall I had
a toasty journey and didn't get cold at all.

So for anyone who thinks riders with fleeces/jackets over their leathers
look a bit poncey, you're right, but it bloody well works.

    I don't quite get wearing a fleece over leathers - fleeces aren't
windproof, so the draught is constantly replacing the nice hot layer of
air you have trapped twixt fleece and leathers with cold air.

If you wore the fleece inside leathers then the leathers provide a
windproof layer and the fleece can work as an insulating layer. It
works much better that way round for me.

I'll agree that a jacket/oversuit makes the whole plot toasty though.

Has it occurred to you to wonder what the word 'Windstopper' in the
above paragraph might be referring to?

  4. I think you'll find that windproof fleeces are.
Even Hein Gericke are selling their own brand of windstopper fleece now.

Yes, but not everyone wears one-piece/two-piece leathers that are three
    sizes too large for them.

Not in the windproof ones - that said, they still ride up unless they're
    elasticated/tied up.
I don't quite get wearing leathers that are too large...
    That's what I do / wear winter kit :)

So every person I've seen wearing a fleece over their leathers has been
    wearing a windstopper one?
    Thanks.

They don't? But how do you get a fleece inside it to keep you warm in
    winter?

No, some of them will be poser twats who don't understand. But I really
can recommend wearing a windstopper on the outside of your jacket.

As I said to Ace, I don't assume everyone I see would be wearing a
    windproof one. Perhaps I should.
It's a combination of them being 4.5 years old, them stretching when I
did, not shrinking when I did, and me not replacing them. They were a
touch on the large side when I got them, which I put down to being
stupid in believing the dealer that they were a perfect fit and being
dazzled by the 1/2 price offer.

    I don't - I wear some nice hi-tech thermals underneath it, so I don't
have to be all bulky, like.

If superman can wear his y-fronts over his tights, then there's nothing
wrong with wearing your biking gear with the layers back to front. Anyone
ever investigated the benefits of wearing a wooly hat over their helmet?
