The BBC and racism.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Old Fart at Play, Oct 24, 2003.

  1. Is the BBC riddled with institutional racism?

Just listened to "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again" on BBC7.
It wasn't funny in 1973 and it's quite disgusting now
with the caricatures of other nationalities....

I reckon John Cleese, Bill Oddie et al should be sacked!

Care to enlighten us? I couldn't find anything in their on-line audio
    archives.

On a related but tangential subject...

We've got the MOBOs - which is great - no problems there, everybody's happy.

But why do I feel uncomfortable with the thought of a MOWO award?

What about Love thy Neighbour, that had inverted racism . Think of the
    "white honky " stuff etc.

Personally I don't understand this racism thing. For sure there is often
a bias towards certain cultures and particular ways of life. However, I
prefer to judge people on their own merits, and IMHO a person can quite
equally be nice, or an arsehole, regardless of their race.

I don't know the piece you are talking about, but I do believe that fun
can be had from all cultures, and one thing we often forget is that
humour is often pointed at ourselves as much as it is at others.

In my own observations of this matter though, I seem to see 'racism'
being shouted by those that actually appear to be racist themselves.

Indeed, no fuss was made of that.

I really do wish we could accept humour for what it is, and just enjoy
    the moment.

Back when we were pulling SWMBO around by the hair and not vice versa,
celebrating the diversity of an approaching new culture would probably
have ended in prompt eviction from the family cave at the very least.
No, AFAIC racism, tribalism, clanism, in fact most fucking ism's are
evoluntionary , innate responses to perceived potential threats.
    We're not talking rational here.
A recent programme on BBC2 showed a group of 2nd, 3rd generation black
guys discussing asylum. If you disguised the voice a little and
pixelated their face they could have been a group of white factory
workers circa 1970. Why, because they felt threatened by this new
influx of immigrants who are milking the system, etc, etc,. Racism,
as people like to call it, is innate to ALL human beings in my view.

perhaps you just feel uncomfortable with singling out a person's
achievements based on their colour? (as one should)

although I do believe the awards are for the music of black ORIGIN, so
obviously you dont have to be black to win or be nominated for an award

Just about every modern day tune can trace its roots back to a musical
genre of black origin, be it Jazz, Blues, Soul etc.

They may be for music of black origin, but the origin seems to mean
the origin of the artist rather than the music.

  14. I'm not racist.
I hate everyone equally, irrespective of race, creed, colour etc.

Yesterday's ISIRTA had jokes about boot-polish, putting Bill Oddie
in an oven to make him black, bad impersonations of sterotypical
    African-American farm workers etc.
Did I miss the irony or has the world changed so much in thirty years?

I think I'll stick to Hancock, Horne etc. on BBC7 from now on.

I know, but non-black artists don't win very often.

    Positive discrimination again.

Come on darsy, I expect a better response than that from you, of all

    And?

There are obviously some funny idiosyncracys that these people have that
are good for a joke, different cultures of our own race also have such
things too, and are also used for jokes.
Personally I found Hancock to be a complete bore.
