It's not that they don't understand, they simply like to argue the point.
They make "Devils advocate" a pastime.

Ignore them and follow the sensible thread is my advice. We started by
talking about petrol prices, simply refuse to be drawn into a pointless
    agrument about grammar.

It is not pointless. I for one find it very educational.

Any teacher worth their salt will tell you what a marvellous thing peer
group pressure is when it comes down to getting people to conform.
Getting us to conform to the same rules of grammar is not a bad thing is
    it?

    Quod erat demonstrandum

The subject was (and still is) about petrol prices. You want to talk
grammar, start an OT thread, Although I have to remind you that this has
been discussed at unbelievable length already.

    What does that mean?

The subject which heads up this thread is about petrol prices, in case
you need reminding it is: "The 1 UKP/Litre has arrived"

Why start when I can (and did) respond to an existing theme.

Ad nauseum. We are forever telling newbies that this is how it is and
there is bugger all you or anyone else can do to change it. Far too
much inertia and very little ffaq reading you see.

And, it seems you need reminding over and over and over and over again
that you are very much in a minority of one in a pond of thousands and
that threads don't always stay on topic.

Indeed. Only today, I acquired a copy of Rifles by Mark Urban[1], and it's
a good book thus far, but the boy Mark is only semi-literate, which makes
    some passages hard going.

  13. I think it was aimed squarely at the (by then) mid 40s and older who
could relate to National Service and the characters they remembered from
it. Certainly left me totally unimpressed, from what I saw of it. And
yet, books like 'The Virgin Soldiers' managed to raise a laugh or two.

I don't see the point in "Plonking people" as you:

    A) Still see thier posts in other peoples replies.

    B) Get missing posts in threads.

I reply to any sensible post that I hope I can do the same to, and you made
    a sensible post.

I made a very unsensible post, I was commenting on how nice it was for the
website to allow me to screw their data.
