Went into the local registrations office to register the Hongdou on
    Thursday.

The tax disc has arrived today, but not the V5C.

Given that everywhere wants to see a V5C before making up a plate, it
looks like I won't be riding it this weekend.

    Argh!

Well, yes, that's the obvious solution.

But I was kind of hoping I could pop along to my local Chav Emporium and
get one made up this afternoon.

www.fancyplates.com, Constructor, select standard UK plate, put in
reg, next, rear plate only, motorcycle = £11.50 inc P&P & VAT and they
don't ask for the reg doc.

If you want something that looks a bit more colourful (and with a
    honeycomb effect), like <http://www.bgn.me.uk/bike/b6/plate.jpg> (but
without the big black bit) then it'll cost you £18.20 inc P&P & VAT.

They also include the plastic yellow/black nut & bolt + sticky stuff
if you want to mount it that way in the price for the normal or fancy
    plate.

    Yes, but that's mail order.

    I wanted a plate today.

Bit annoying as I have the tax disc with the reg. number on it.

Bit of cardboard, marker pen, gaffer tape.

Heh. The thought has crossed my mind.

It's asking for a tug, though.

"Terribly sorry, officer. I've just registered the bike, and received the
tax disc this morning <produces covering letter from pocket> but not the
V5C yet - and, as you're well aware, without that, I can't get an official
    plate made up."

    You're missing the point.

By the time a mail order plate arrives, I'll have the V5C so can just
pop along to a local motor factor to get one made up.

The old Samaritan trick of repeating back to the caller what they have
just said so that they will find their own solution works on usenet
    too kiddies.
