Based on it in terms of the Hesketh being a V-twin and not a 4?

Driven one of those, and an XK SS. My old boss when I was selling Jaguar
    trim owns them both.

I used to have a 'D' type. Bought it for 40 quid - drove it for 4
months till the MOT ran out, then sold it after it had stood on a mates

I take it you're not talking about a proper D Type Jaguar?

I am. But it was 24 years ago. They weren't worth as much then (not
when they were rusted through anyway).

Be interested if you remember. I can't remember them /selling/ a 4 even
if they may have experimented with designing one. I think the V1000 has
been their main product since they started in around 1981ish.
It is looking better out there all the time.
That's all you ever get with that sort...

Well... They are both V twins. That's about where the similarity ends.

Compare mass produced trailer-trash wank-porn with hand built British
machinery. It's like comparing an old Roller with a Ford Edsel.

One of those "I wish I'd hung on to that" cars. I had two Mk1 Mini
Cooper S 1071s on the trot, and sold both for less than 50 quid each.
You can't find one for less than 10 grand now.

Of course, if it was the Cunty Club, he'd get straight in, no
    problems.

I agree, but that's an old car. That Ducati is like Jaguar producing
a new car that looked almost exactly the same as an E-type.

err, the Jag XKR is rather similar to an E-type...

True enough, but it's not virtually the same, is it?

I was just giving an example where a manufacturer has created a
vehicle which is visually informed by a much older model, but which
uses much more modern technology than the original, which - to my mind
    - is what Ducati has attempted to do with its Sport Classics range
(and yes, sure, there's a lot less difference in the engines of the
two Dukes than the two Jags).

That said, I don't *really* like these Ducatis either, but I think
    it'll suit Blaney nicely.

Well, there's two issues: an E-type is just a D-type with a windscreen
    and no aerofoil hump.

And the Duke is a good looking bike. I can't see the problem with
    making good-looking bikes.

Sorry, yeah I know that. For some reason I had a brain-fart and type
E instead of D. Would love to own an E one day.
This is true, I think it's just me and I like design to be moved on
    rather than looking back.

I'd rather have a D than an E. And I'd rather have an XK120 than
    either of them.

If you must have a E, get a series 1.
But many of the "new" designs are hideous: Aprilia Futura, VFR VTEC,
    etc.

    I'd rather have my Duke.

It'd have to be an XK140 DHC in original RHD form for me. That's one of
the rarest Jaguar production cars ever made. IIRC they only made about
57 RHD ones, and most of them were exported to Australia.

After watching Top Gear tonight my new object of desire is a DB9. I
    may sell my house soon.
True, but I don't see them as moving the goalposts of design much
either, most 'modern' bikes are just refinements of a template. Even
my own is nothing special design-wise.
Hope you don't think I'm slagging off your bike, I'm not, it's very
you. And I'd love to have a go when you get it just to see if it
rides well. After all, how it rides is the important thing.

I notice that after proclaiming those three Astons as the best cars in
the world, he mentioned he's still getting his Ford.

I'd take either. Even the missus was pestering me to buy her a DB9, which
makes a pleasant change from demands for a car, a ring, a holiday at
    Sandals, a new man, etc...
