That's going to be expensive.

It would be really fucking nice if you could learn to post in a
    readable manner.

If you start on a line without a character at the start of it - like a
BLANK line, that would be a really good idea.

Good nick engines with less than 4K miles are going for 1500ukp. By

Actually, I'd say when the VFR came out, which was 87, I think. 84
and 85 they were still making awful bags of shit (CBX550, VF500, etc.
This was during the years when Yamaha and Honda were vying to be
number one, and new models seemed to be announced every 3 months.
Something had to give, and it was quality (or, in the case of the
    Yamaha XV550, sanity).

The VFR was very obviously a clean break, and was massively
over-engineered to try and kill the reliability problems that the
VF750 had. Don't forget that Honda had nailed its colours to the V4
mast, with the VF400, 500, 750 and 1000. V was the way forward. But
the various problems caused all of these to be dropped apart from the
    VFR.

Well, I hold no allegiance for Suzuki (my heart will always be green),
but at least they've been providing their customers with bikes that
actually do what they want over that period (i.e. go like the
    bejesus).

    1986 to be pedantic.
The VF500 was actually a very reliable bike that performed well and
handled brilliantly. What put people off buying them was the price, it
was really expensive compared to the opposition. I'll grant the
CBX550/CBX750 were a bags of shite though.
Yamaha launched the XZ550[1][2] in 1982. A long way before the VFR came
out, probably around the same time the original VF range was announced.

[1] I think this is the bike you mean. The one with the trailing axle
front forks and very angular styling?
[2] In 1982 I took one out for a ride on a Yamaha test day at Coburn and
Hughes. What a god-awful pile of steaming donkey shit it was.
