Coming home from work this morning on a nice bit of narrow 100km/h road
through scrub on the outskirts of town, approaching a deep floodway that
follows a rise in the road. Not speeding.

Come over the top, there's a bloody council mobile lawnmower on the bloody
bridge doing about 10km/h with three cars almost at a full stop behind him.

Shit! Hit the anchors going down into the floodway, (Gawd I love the Pig's
brakes) the rear locks, I'm doing a lightning estimate of where I'm gunna
stop and I work out it's gunna be about halfway through the middle car...

Quick scan, oncoming 4WD, head for the double lines but then the oncoming
vehicle is through and the oncoming lane is clear. I sail through while
swearing loudly at the mower driver...

    Hi Doug,

Yes, that's the kind of surprise we can all do without!

Reminds me - a few months ago, a couple of us on bikes were heading north on
the Pacific Hwy in a 110 zone, just north of Buladelah Mtn on the freeway -
in rain of course. About 500m ahead, cars in both lanes were *very* hard on
the anchors and suddenly we had to slow rapidly.

The brain-dead morons who are the local police in the area had set up a
speed gun on a tripod and hidden it on the left of the road. One of the
cops flagged a car in the right lane (as far as I could tell) to stop and
damn near created a bloody pile-up at the same time as the driver performed
his braking manoeuvre (along with the confused driver in the left lane).

Anyway, it was truly incredible to me that these &%$ers would do such a
thing. At least another police car 300m further up the road would give more
warning and room to stop. It could have cost a few lives if we'd been
    closer to the cars.

    Glad you're OK.

    Cheers,

I've been told that police aren't allowed to do RBTs in wet weather,
because the limited visibility and confusion it creates represents too
great a danger (ostensibly to the copper who would sue for millions
after getting hit by a sliding car...as if they'd care about us)

I don't know how they can pull drivers over like this in the wet.

    Glad you made it Doug.

I'm considered a bit cautious by those I ride with, but I refuse to ride
faster than I can see, ie I can stop in my sight-distance. This morning on
Malcolm's Hut Rd, a small link-road between two larger roads, I was down to
about 60 over a crest, and on the other side was a mob of sheep from fence
to fence. I stopped ok, but at 100 I wouldn't have had a hope.

  5. But at least sheep would've made for a soft landing...
(and, don't sheep congregate in "flocks"? After all, what one shepherd said
to the other shepherd_was_"Let's get the_flock_out of here?")

I thought most states had put statutory limits on the amounts of payouts for
    traffic and workplace accidents.
