That went unexpectedly easily

My Guzzi V11 has had a slightly sloppy gearchange ever since I've had
the bike. According to a few reports, this isn't entirely unexpected.
Over the colder months it got worse, with no journey complete without
missing third or fourth gear upshifts at least a couple of times,
especially when the gearbox was cold.

After some thought it became obvious that the dogs and selector forks
were OK, because downshifts were fine. So, the problem lay with the
selector mechanism in some way. Close examination of the gearbox
diagrams suggested that there was an adjustable shaft accessible from
the outside and also that the selector mechanism itself mounts on a
plate on the left side of the gearbox, which appears to be removable
without removing the entire gearbox. Bonza.

However, following my usual mantra of "always try the easily
accessible bits first" (also substitute "cheap to fix" for "easily
accessible" as appropriate) I tried simply cleaning, adjusting and
    greasing the gearshift linkage.

I haven't used the bike a huge amount since then, but so far, not a
    single missed change.

    Happy bunnies 'R' us.
