That was the big end, that was....

  1. Hello, that sounds like an odd knock....

Ease the throttle off and there's the hint of a misfire. Strange.

Give it full welly, and yes, there's definitely an odd sound there.

Five seconds later there's a God-almighty *BANG!* and the thing stops
dead. Using the starter only produces a horrible rattle. Oooh dear,
    muvver.

I quickly remove the nearest engine cover, and a piece of alloy
crankcase falls onto my foot. There's a hole in the cases you could
stick a child's fist through. It's thrown a rod. The engine is
    completely totalled.

****. That's me down to B&Q to buy a new lawnmower, then.

(Didn't run it out of oil, either. No idea what happened, but it's the
most comprehensively blown-up mower I've ever seen).

I see it every day mate,

Blown casings, fucked ends, bent cranks, broken mounts, blades bent,
and any amount of ways to stop a mower so they can have a break instead of
    working.

Bugger B & Q, go to a proper mower man and get a real mower that'll last and
don't get a cheapo either you tight wad........ ;-p

I got a bargain at our local B+Q. It's built by Ransomes but badged as a
Cooper, with Tekumseh 35 engine and driven wheels, for 110 quid.

  6. That's *exactly* what I did with this one, when I bought it. And the
specialist mower place closed down eighteen months ago.

  7. What sort of engine did you have?

My Briggs&Stratton Sprint375 has coped with half an acre of grass
for 7 years and was going strong until last night when I tried
to mow a brick. It will probably continue for years after I get
    a new blade.

I've had a Honda for about 10 years, wasn't new when I got it. No
problems, it probably gets about 1/2 an hours use a week in the summer.

Maintenance: Er... I add petrol and clean out the air filter. That's it
really. Check the oil about once a year, never seems to go down.

S'pose I ought to change the oil really, one day...

  10. Good man. Well, this engine is beyond hope and I was looking for a
specialist mower place, so I'll give them a call.

    Seriously, Robbo - much appreciated.

I bought an early seventies Suffolk Colt for £25. Used it for five years
when where we lived at the time had a garden that justified a petrol
    mower.

Then sold it for £25, for all I know its still going.

  12. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Old Fart at Play
Aye but there's two distinct types of B&S engine. The el cheapo ones
rely on splashlube for the crank (at least they used to), so it's hardly
surprising they go bang from time to time.
