That was fun.

  1. Today I are mostly been pratting about on a TS250, and inexplicably
failing to fall off. Memo to self, going fast on a dirt track is one
thing, stopping is another matter altogether.

I *love* the look of disgust on the dog walkers' faces when you pass
them on a RUPP. Makes it worth slowing down for a better look.

    This is/was a RUPP:

    http://www.multimap.com/map/photo.c...m=0&scale=10000&multimap.x=176&multimap.y=226

It's the track that goes from top centre diagonally to the right and into
the woods. Where it starts (at the top), it's the sort of track that you
might imagine was used by a Land-Rover. Within a few yards, it becomes
obvious that there hasn't been a Landie along there for a couple of years,
as the brambles/hedges/weeds etc start to close in. A few more yards and
they meet in the middle, but you can push your way through. This continues
until you reach the wood, but by then, there's another factor in play: as it
starts to climb the slope, the surface changes from Landie wheel tracks to a
central gully. By the time you reach the edge of the wood, the ascent is
quite steep, the gully sides are at 45°, but the brambles have ceased to be
a problem, as they don't seem bothered about growing on sticky orange
subsoil. Once it's back up onto the flat (a little distance into the wood),
it turns back into a Landie track.

The point being that it's now only passable with stout boots, thornproof
clothing, an ashplant and determination, whereas if it was in regular use by
motorised vehicles it would be granny-navigable. A few more years and the
lower part will be a thick hedge, of no use to man or beast.

  5. And what is also fun is, as a dog-walker, seeing the hard-man riders' faces
adopt an expression of disbelief and suspicious almost-pleasure when you
greet them with a smile and a 'hello' as they pass. Live and let live,
goddammit. A track near me has been closed off to vehicles. Someone didn't
take kindly to that, and stowed a 4WD straight through the ****-off five-bar
gate. Good for them, thought I. A new gate has been installed, and I
really hope they come back and keep demolishing every one of its successors
    until the council give up.

I'd be reserving judgement until I knew how long the track is closed
for and why. It might be that 4WD vehicles have fucked it up so much
that the council have closed it for a year or so to let it dry out and
go from being a wide strip of mud and shit to being a decent track
    again.

I've seen first hand the state of footpaths that have gradually
widened because people don't stick to them and it's usually volunteers
that then have to give up their weekends trying to stabilise them and
make them safer places for the clowns that fucked them up in the first
    place.

On the other hand the council referred to by you in your post might
just be cunts and shutting the path "because they can" and if that's
the case the gate wants removing.
