That was a little nerve-racking

  1. Notrun Owners' Club gearbox DVD:

"Yow kin just run a tap into this bush and then pull it out, or yow kin
    bore it out onna lathe".

No suitable size tap to hand, so boring it out it was.

Straightforward enough, but an up-**** would have been a tad spendy. I
just hope I can press the new one in nice and straight.

If you ever need big taps let me know. I've got metric coarse & fine to M32)
Not the time for a clamp or bolt to move on a faceplate, or the fucking
phone to ring, or a mate to tell you _right in your ear_ that "you really
don't wanna do it like that"

As for pressing the new bush in straight, what about using a mandrel in the
bush mounted in the tailstock to get it started then remove as an assembly
to your new press for final pressing in? I'd do the final reaming in the
lathe though whatever method you use to get the bush in.

    Good luck.

Noted, ta. I've got a few biggish ones, but none that would just fit
without boring it, so I might as well have bored it, IYSWIM.
I just made a mandrel and pressed the fucker in. I'm used to squeezing a
large stiff thing into a tight hole.
No reaming required, according to Mr Hemmings, and it seems like a
reasonable running fit. The camplate bush is a tad tight, but nothing to
    write home about.

    <Famous last words mode>

It'll probably free up a bit with some use.

I'l bet he has, I'll bet he has too. And "Snap-On" always seemed a little
too close to "Strap-On" for my tastes.
I'll stick to Britool. Got to fly the flag you see ;>)

One trick you can use to get a bush out of a blind hole is to put some oil
into the hole, then slide a close-fitting bit of rod in and clout it with
    the adjusting stick.

    Oh aye.

And if Notrun hadn't kindly drilled a perpendicular hole in the shaft to
take the kickstart spring, that might even have worked.

Still, it made an easy place to put the air line for the post-boring
    cleanup.

Hmm. Refurbing the gear box was on my list of things to do this
winter, had I kept the bike. Sounds beyond my capabilities though!

It's going to be a lovely bike when you've got it all together and
    then I'll sulk.

  18. It'll be a lovely bike for about ten miles, and then he'll be cursing
it. You're well shot of it, IMHO.

It was quite interesting to compare the Notrun side by side with my
Morini - similar vintages but the Morini is just light years ahead in
    every way possible.

That's not really fair on the Norton - it's not really of a similar
vintage at all, it's just that they were still making them (badly)
thirty years after they should have stopped.

IIRC the CBX is only 3 or 4 years more "modern" than the Morini.
