That strikes me as cheap

  1. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, The Older

The innocent impala wanders aimlessly into range of the rather knackered
old crocodile. It bends to drink...
.... and the croc strikes. Nothing now can save the impala.

If you do end up with one that needs a new mudguard I may well have this
slightly bent one that will do....
    £55 ?

  7. Heh.

Got it now, anyway. It's pretty good, but to get it 'really nice' would
take some dosh. Needs a respray and new decals. Nice paint, but not
original. Frame pa`int is very very good, so that must have been done at
    some time.

Chrome: some rust under the seat, on the rear guard, where they all go,
but the chrome you can see is good. Front guard is excellent. Rear wheel
has been recently rebuilt with new spokes and rim. Front one's been
respoked with heavier duty spokes: chrome on that rim is dull.

Exhaust - near new, or as new as makes no different, headers plus a
    pattern can. Superb.

Seat - serviceable but needs replacing, really.

Engine: no rattles or smokes, runs sweetly, but is a bit 'woolly' when
cold. So needs a complete tune-up: carb balance, air filter, tappets,
timing, plugs, maybe a mixture check.

    Everything else damn good.

Cab, I don't think it's what you want. IMHO it needs new paint, new
seat, and a long fettle by someone who really knows their 400 Fours.
Plus a new front rim. That little lot is probably £500 worth, and you'd
still need a replacement rear guard: heavy money.

As it stands, it's realistically worth £850-900, so I'm going to break
it. I kept an open mind until I saw it, and totted up the really good
in-the-want costly bits that are on it (lots) and the cost of replacing
the other bits with equally costly stuff.

I echo Cab's earlier sentiment - it always seems a shame when you do
this, especially when it's just for a quick buck. You clearly have no
    soul.
Have you ever considered gion into partnedrship with someone who could
actually manufacture some of the RHS stuff? I mean, how difficult can
it be to make a rear mudguard? It's just some pressed metal,
chrome-plated. As for the tooltray - I mean who really gives a shit?
Apart from the 'must-be-original brigade', I mean. But if they do it's
just some pressed plastic, surely you could get a couple of hundred
knocked together for not much money?

  10. It's very, very nice. Some tiny pinpricks in the chrome, but that's all.
No rust, no dings, and complete with stays.

    Dave Silver charges £115+VAT for a new'un. That's £135 and some pennies.
I'll say £65, or just under half the new price.
