That perennial PC question

    This ancient Dell running a celeron has been getting more and more on
    my tits with it's lack of oomph. Since SP3 for XP it's been I think
    even worse. So what's the best bang for the £ at the moment? I don't
    need the absolute latest fastest box and I don't really get computer
    games so super dooper video isn't a must[1].

    Something that could convert a couple of hours of MPEG2 to MPEG4
    before the next iceage is what I really need. Ideally I'd like to
    avoid Vista in any of it's incarnations and either stick with XP or
    get Windows 7.[2]

    look a reasonable fit? Any other suggestions?


    [1] Of course if something comes with a decent Video card that would
    be top.
    [2] It has to be Microsoft OK so not a MAC or some beardy weirdy
    system.[3]
    [3] I *may* stick a Linux version on the Dell once it's replacement is
    here.
