Jeez, i know it had snowed in the UK, but I didn't think the weather

Nah, -4C is apparently the 'average' for New York winters. But by 'eck
it feels a lot colder when you hit the wind. My hands felt like they
were going to drop off yesterday, when I foolishly forgot my gloves.

Not seen many bikers braving the elements. Merkins must all be soft. Or
is it the bike-sized pot-holes in New York roads that is putting them
off?
