    Yeah, I just read that.

I wonder what it is that made him plead guilty to dangerous driving, as
have others beforehand in similar circumstances? Is it really that
easy for the prosecution to pin a DD verdict for "just" speeding?

I imagine he's been given a Drug Treatment and Testing Order. We were
a pilot for those, but I don't know how they're working out. Fine in
    theory, I thought.

If it helps to prevent re-offending I totally agree.

Sits rather ill with six months for speeding[1] though, doesn't it?

    [1] yes, yes, yes...

Absolutley, more dangerous that "losing control", whatever that
means, of a car at 70 mph ?

My wife's just phoned to say that R2 is discussing whether taking children
on motorbikes should be banned, but I really can't be arsed to listen to the
uninformed drivel of a bunch of middle-Englanders.

It's OK - apparently the side of the bikers was championed by that paragon
of all things 2-wheeled Steve Berry.

Phew, thank goodness they shelled out for somebody intelligent and
articulate who is admired by all bikers.

    No video here :(

    # Exeter Crown Court heard his son was not wearing any protective clothing
    # at the time of the offence in April 2008.

So just what is required by law? A helmet as far as I know. Sikhs exempt
of course. Kid was wearing a helmet wasn't he?

"The court heard that the defendant was not wearing ladies underwear at
    the time of the offence."

    # His son was filmed holding on to the seat of the motorbike with his
    # bare hands.

Are gloves a legal requirement now? I had no idea. Is there some arcane
law dictating that children under the age of whatever should not ride
    pillion?

I particularly liked the line from PC Russell.

    # "Robert Bennett accepted that what he did was dangerous and the
    # sentence passed by the court today reflects how serious this incident
    # was.

Of course he accepted it. Is he going to stand up in court and say its
    safe.

Its dangerous! Crossing the road where I live ranks higher on the scale
of danger than a wee zip up to 120 odd, on a straight. He's been shafted
because of the kid. Quite obviously. He broke the law by speeding and
deserved punishment but as Wicked Uncle Nigel points out up there ^ you
can do far worse and get far less.

The Safety Nazis are coming! The man with the red flag better be a fast
    runner.

So who here has never been up to 120[1] then? Come on hands up.

[1] On a private road or track with approved safety support etc. :)

I've never been above 110 with my daughter on the back - she's got all of
the protective gear, but she's 6 years younger than the lad in the story.

So, would I be in for a bum-raping for that speed/child/gear combination, or
would I get off with a ban?

I put my nephew on the back of the 12R, and did 90 with him in jeans.
I was similarly attired [1] but we both had armoured jackets, gloves,
    boots and helmets on.

    P.

[1] As I think it's poor form to be in better protective gear than
your pillion, why would your skin be more valuable than theirs ?

Probably the former unfortunately. But as a dad you're not deliberately
going to put your child at undue risk. A short nip down the road and a
long Sunday ride are two different missions. Both of which may involve
different yet similar risks. The motives behind why the kid in question
was not leathered up are not clearly examined, but it does say he was
being picked up for a visit which might imply a short nip down the road
type trip. Now much as I hate to say it we've probably all nipped out for
a fag run or whatever without a full accoutrement of protective goodies
    wrapped around our fragile forms.

I don't want to be defending his actions here as he is quite clearly in
the wrong by going so fast, but he appears to have been pilloried for
things that are not, to my knowledge, against the law. I was more aiming
a shot at the ([i|n]?justice system) where perfectly legal things have
been used against him in the Exeter Crown Court (of public opinion it
would seem) according to the article by auntie beeb.

From what I remember you are a very safe rider who doesn't use speed
inappropriately and are very logical and predictable in the operation of
your vehicle on the roads. Which is probably more than can be said for
me :) and definitely more than can be said of "Big Rick"[1] But the trip
to 120 is but a moment away on a swift motorcycle. In the wrong place it
is bad and on the road it's against the law. I believe the law should be
enforced. However the more laws we have the harder the enforcement part
is. When people start bringing things into a court of law that are not a
matter of law then what has the law become?

    [1] Is he still around?

I quite agree - it seems to me that his legal representation must have been
particularly poor if they advised him to plead guilty to the dangerous
charge in the first place and then let the prosecution drag irrelevant
    information in to the proceedings.
