  1. What would you recommend from HG then?

I'm in the market for new jacket and trews, both of which now leak like
    a bastard.

I've got a budget of about £300 for the pair but might be able to
    stretch to £400, but that's it.[1]

Something in between would be good because there's bound to be something
else I need that I've forgotten.

    Cheers.

    [1] Tall order?

  4. Them's the sort of thing.

Waterproof, removable lining and cheap :)

    <Shudder>

Is it just me or is that a young Nigel Eaton lookalike?
All that looks ok, thanks. I'm not too bothered about warmth TBH,
because I buy my stuff a couple of sizes too big and stuff extra layers
    and newspaper on anyway.

There's a shop in Greenwich I'll go and have a look in.

    Thank you!

I currntly have a pair of their leather jeans that I got cheap from Ally
Pally one year. Whilst they have protected me in a low speed spill with a
ped, I really don't reckon they're up to much. One of the seams at the back
of the knee started to unravel within days and the lining came lose fast.

I have the Goretex Voyager jacket. It's not bad enough I'm going to chuck
it out, but I won't buy another one unless it gets a major re-design.

It's waterproof and reasonably well made but there are too many little
    niggly problems with it.

The hip pockets leak badly. I don't expect exterior pockets to be
waterproof but these are appalling. The linings are loose, too: it can be
really quite tricky to remove keys from them without grabbing the lining
and emptying the entire contents onto the road.

The breast pockets are very fiddly to close, with just velcro.
(Especially awkward with gloves on.) If you get it wrong they leak badly.
If you get it all sealed right, they're acceptable, but not good.

There's only one inside pocket. This has a zip, but the lining is so
loose that it's almost impossible to use with just one hand. It's even
worse when you put the thermal lining in.

The front is closed with a zip and poppers, so it can be a bit drafty.
One of the poppers has come off, too, (but I'll get that repaired under
warranty as soon as I can find the receipt). I've also had the neck -
which just has a velcro closure - come open at high speed.

With the inner lining, it's not all that warm. I've know better. Without
the lining it's actually quite cool, so it makes a half-decent summer
jacket. The thermal lining is a bit short, too. It only comes down to
the waist. OK, I guess, if you're wearing the matching trousers but
    otherwise a bit chilly.

The lining - not the removable one: the one under that - is a bit loose in
    the sleeves.

The cuffs are a little too tight: it's very difficult to get them over a
    pair of winter gloves.

The pockets aren't waterproof and they aren't sold as being waterproof,
so you can't really count this one.
The Sheltex jacket has poppers, they are quite easy to use with a gloved
    hand.
I've not had this problem on mine. My jacket has two inside pockets
also, one is outside of the zip behind the storm flap and is 100%
    waterproof.
Mine is a bit short on velcro round the neck. I find it hard to make the
velcro hold when I have a thick neck warmer on.
The gore version has a short liner because it has a full zip, the
Sheltex one has a short zip at the back which allows a full length
liner. Mine is brilliant at keping me warm, I cannot complain. You're
right about the coolness in summer. I quite often choose my Voyager
    rather than leathers in summer
    No complaints there
Mine are too. I can just squeeze the cuffs on my Pathans under them, but
it takes some doing when the other hand is already gloved and tucked in.

Overall I'm very happy with my Voyager 111. I've had it close on 18
months and done 20 odd thousand miles in it. It still looks and performs
    like new.

This is the sole reason I got rid of my HG and bought an MJK.

Very. Waterproof, toasty warm in winter and plenty of ventilation in
summer. One of your better sales.

Which reminds me - is BJ still around? We're down at the NEC again
this year and might look him up.

    Thanks for that. Leaves me wondering now :}

I shall think on, and certainly take my Pathans for a fitting session.

    Excellent, glad you're happy.
Apparently the man himself will be working at the NEC, but I won't be
due to work. I should hopefully have that sorted by the time the Ally
    Pally show comes around.

It's more because the original gore-tex is now off patent, so every
Tom Dick or Harry is now able to make it under their own brand name.
At the same time, however, WS Gore released their new membrane,
Gore-tex XCR, which is once again miles ahead of the competition.
