    Hello All -

Does anyone have the September issue of RiDE magazine?

There was a test of a number of textile winter suits, one of which was
a clear winner. If you have a copy, could I trouble you to post the
brand and model of the 'best buy' suit, please.

    Thanks

    Alan

  2. I've recently bought a pair of the trews and would highly recommend
them. I replaced the standard armour with soft squidgy stuff for an
upgrade fee. come with a ten year guarantee for the goretex option.

You bought the Voyager Gore, not the Voyager 111.

I have the Voyager 111 jacket and Voyager 1 trews with the zip-off bib
and brace. I really like both and have never been cold or wet in over
20,000 miles of wearing them. My only complaint would be the inner
lining sometimes catches in the fiddly zip on the jacket.

Loz, which one have I got?

I only ask, cos it now has the waterproofing ability of a tea-bag, and
the zip's gone. As has Linda's.

I might go shopping in the morning.

The only marking I can find is "Membrane Sheltex"

    Same as mine, Voyager 111
    How old is it now?
Look at getting it replaced under warranty if it is under 2 years old

It rocks. I had the first one for 4 years and 50k miles, on the second
(dayglo yellow) one at the mo. Never leaked a drop, comfy etc. Never
    crashed in it mind....

  8. I've been meaning to ask: What is Sheltex?

Is it the same as Gore-Tex but produced by another firm so that they
have to call it something else?

I'm led to believe HG bought the rights to produce and use the original
Goretex under their own brand name, after Gore developed what they use
    now.

  10. Thanks, Mister.

I rather like the Master IV set but really cannot justify the expense,
and anyway, what's the point of having a thermometer on the inside of
your jacket when you have to freeze to death just to see what
    temperature you were. The drinking system's a bit of a gimmick as well;
that's nothing a can in your pocket and a length of fuel hose won't sort
if you really can't take your lid off to have a drink.

So in your opinion, is it worth the additional GBP70 for the gore tex
version? I was looking in HG in Braintree the other day, and the set did
    look tempting in either version.

Seriously, going by my own experience of Sheltex membranes I'd say no.
The jackets have very little differences as regards features, it's
mostly down to the choice of waterproof membrane. The Goretex trousers
come with a zip-off bib and brace, which I quite like, whereas the
    Sheltex ones don't.

Other people I know have had them fail though, Dodger being one of them.
If you buy the Goretex version you get a 10 year guarantee from the
membrane manufacturers. HG Sheltex only comes with a 2 year guarantee.

Kewl. I've bin well pleased with mine, tbh. I'm not sure about the
belt design, especially when used on the, erm, larger sizes. If you
cinch in the belt, all it does it put extra strain on the zip and
    poppers.
    Nearly three years.
    Ah.

Oh, well, it only cash. What I don't got.
I got plastic though, and that's just as good.
    Probly.

Sheltex doesn't seem to last that well.

My trews are holding up nicely but the arms on the voyager jacket now
leak quite badly. Around the well flexed bits is worstest, particularly
    the creases inside the elbow.

Not the fastenings, I can live with that no problems. It is a right
handed world after all and us left handers are generally, through force
of circumstance, more dextrous. The pocket arrangements though are
completely right handed. Kin discrimination and downright
thoughtlessness with regard to 20% of their customers that is.

My HG leather trousers are burds ones. They were the only ones they had
    with half sized legs.

Hmm, I find that feature quite attractive. Especially since I am likley to
be buying the trousers first. I always feel a chill in the midriff,
probably cos my current leathers are some 8" to big in the waist now.
The 10 years is also tempting. I have been much disappointed with the
performance of so called waterproof biking clothes. HG Lobster Pathans
    excluded, natch.

    Cheers for the info.
