I have got the vf500 f2 home and its pretty mint. brakes are binding which
    is no prob.

have fitted a new battery from my gpz.

owner says last battery went because the regulator/rectifier went. there is
however some wiring leading to an alarm in the tail unit. I have removed
    all this.

How do I go about testing the reg/rec unit to see if that was at fault? I
have a 'digital measuring instrument' from maplins.

First and easiest thing to do is take it out and have a look at it. If
there's charring round any of the pins, it's probably fried. If it's not
that obvious, you'll need to get hold of the Haynes manual for the bike (or
similar), and check that the resistance between various pins is within spec.
If not, it's fried. Expect to pay upwards of £60 for a new one, possibly a
    lot more.

Symptoms of a fried reg/rec are that the battery doesn't charge up (although
that could also be a duff battery), lights stay dim (rev the engine from
idle and check that the lights get brighter - if not, the reg/rec could be
to blame), stalls at idle, and general electrical gremlins.

  4. Just check that it isn't charging first. You know, stick a multimeter
over the battery terminals and rev the engine.

It should read about 12.5v ordinarily, rising to 13-14v as you rev it.

It would be silly if the charging system was OK and it just had a duff
battery and you started ripping out the reg/rec.....

  5. How do I go about testing the reg/rec unit to see if that was at
easiest to test voltage at battery...should be about 13.5 - 14 at 5000 rpm
if less or more reg/rec is shot
if ok, turn all lights and hazards on and see if still ok...if ok under load
and without load then its ok...ok...kewl
