I always listen thinking: "so, he sounds like a poof, but he's not
    one"

I'm reading "Round Ireland with a fridge" at the moment. Classic.

  4. I loved that as well, especially when they take the fridge surfing.

His other stuff isn't as good, IMHO, though Playing Tennis With The
    Moldovians is quite good.

Why does that you you boggle. Over the years I've met lots of chaps
who *sound* very camp, but aren't. And a fair few who don't and are.

Well, firstly, I thought we were talking about in the context of JaM.
Secondly, I didn't say he wasn't funny, just not as funny as he thinks
    he is.

Plus, and I know logically I should ignore it, but sometimes suppressed
prejudices come to the fore: in the brief part of the late 90s were it
was trendy to do so, he jumped on the "English person who knows nothing
about it" bandwagon as a vocal supporter of the cause of the IRA, and I
    find this somewhat irritating.

    ^^^^

    YM "gay".

By definition if someone sounds camp, they're camp. What you're trying
to say, I guess, is "camp" <> "gay".

I read an article about 20 years ago in Playboy (see, people do buy it
for the articles) entitled "Camp: the lie that tells the truth", and
for some reason it's always stuck with me.

I know a girl who's boyfriend is the campest fucker I've ever met (and
I've met a few, having worked at Direct Connection), and she refuses to
entertain the notion he might be, you know, just a little bit gay. This
despite the fact he wears a kilt to things like weddings (he's
English), and is always flirting with other blokes.

Apparently, he also has one of the strangest sexual oddities I've ever
heard of - he doesn't wank. When he feels the urge, he goes and plays
the piano until it's left him.

    Fucking freak.

Well I suppose it saves you having to listen to the dialogue in "Baywatch".

I'd go as far as saying that The Jam are pretty well known
by most of the population too. At lot of their stuff is
still played regularly and they are considered fairly iconic
    (at least of that era).

Well, yes. I don't know if there's a proper definition of being gay,
but I'd guess it involves having sex with other men, which is not
something (to go back to the original point) you can judge fron a tone
of voice on a radio programme.
There was a bloke at work (left now) like that - more camp than John
Inman, very touchy touchy when talking to you - but apparently he was
married (of course, there's plenty of married gay men).
That is one of the oddest things I've ever heard.

I wonder if "men who don't masturbate" is an area of psychological
    study.

there's nothing to do with sex (or the lack of it) that isn't an area
    of psychological study.

Why do you think psychologists get into the game in the first place?
