Tescos unleaded petrol.

In short, my 550/4 just does not seem to like it. I`ve noticed this a few
times, but being the pikey perma-skint bloke that I am, I just couldn`t help
but tank up from there when I was doing my shopping earlier.

It was down to the last few pints of the previous tankful, which was BP
Ultimate.I like to treat it to that or Optimax now and again. Probably
placebo effect, but it just seems so happy with it.

Anyway, Lo and behold, the 550 starts idling a bit rough and once warmed up
a bit more it starts to pink.

Usually, I tank up at the BP near me, using their standard unleaded. As
above, every few tanks or so I`ll treat it to some of the posh stuff. No
problems with either of those two BP fuels whatsoever.

Now, I understand all that malarkey about retarding the ignition timing or
even reducing the compression ratio when using fuel of a lower octane rating
otherwise pinking will occur, but surely Tescos unleaded has the same octane
rating as any other standard unleaded fuel, and therefore should run the
    same no matter what.

So, why does my 550 dislike Tescos unleaded when compared to any other brand
of unleaded fuel, given that it should be of the same basic standard? Also,
has anybody else noticed the Tescos effect when tanking up?

Incidentally, the CB200 does not give a **** what you run it on, so long as
    it is vaguely flammable.

Does using Tesco petrol actually save money? The Esso & Texaco garages
around here seem to sell petrol at the same price and you don't have to
queue with the pikeys. The "pay at pump" at Tesco is handy, especially
on a bike, as you don't have to get off.
The base petrol leaving the refinery is the same for all brands then
each adds its own additive package. I suspect that the quality control
for the likes of BP is much more stringent than for the supermarkets.

Also, BP etc is likely to be more stringent with the hygiene of its
    tanker fleet and storage tanks.
My BMW is like that. In Austria they sell 91 octane fuel. It seemed
happy on this, even at altitude.

It does. Slightly. Very slightly. 2p/litre compared to the BP.
Daft of me really. For the noticable (to my 550 at least) difference between
the two fuels I`m probably only saving about 35p per tankful. It`s the
difference between the performance of the fuels which had me flummoxed.
Which, we come to quite nicely below..)

Ahh. That makes sense. Still, it seems most engines are not quite as
sensitive about it as my 550 seems to be. Maybe it`s an addiction thing. A
petroleum heroin which Tescos leave out..

Heh. My CB200 appears to be the mechanical equivalent of a deleriously happy
puppy. Do what you will and it still comes back with a beaming grin and a
    waggy tail.

Don't work yourself up in a frenzy, you arse. Vlad had already used
"sole", so for the rules of the cascade, you can't use it. That's all.

Nice demented rant, though, btw. Your insane ramblings had been pretty
    well covered up, until then.

    Now here's a funny thing, I say, here's a funny thing...

When Pip and I set off for Donington we filled up at Tesco in Flitwick.
I *know* there are problems in the Z13's fuel delivery, but it was
*really* bad on the way up to Ginge's place, it wouldn't hold anything
about 75-80ish. Pip was very patient, and didn't **** off over the
horizon, but I was pretty pissed off, because it's not been *quite* that
    bad before.

Anyhoooooo... I've filled the tank three times since then, and it's been
noticeably better, holding an indicted ton-plus (allegedly).

It *could* be that it's not been quite as warm, or it *could* be that
the Tesco Flitwick petrol is shite, and tipped the balance on an
    already-iffy fuel system.

    You, the reader, must decide.
