There was a sub-thread going a few weeks ago[1] regarding a quote about sailing and tearing up money as well as who had coined it. The BBC have it attributed to Sir Ted and it is as follows: "Ocean racing is like standing under a cold shower tearing up £20 notes". [1] ICBA to Google.
The quote from Sir Ted THat I recall came on a Panorama investigation of the attempt by Bangemann (?) of Germany to push through Eurpoean legislation mandating leg protectors for motorcycles. The question came up whether the proposal was serious, or just another way of making biking more difficult in the hope that bikers would get fed up and go away. Sir Ted pointed out that bikers were the scum of the earth and that any attempt to legislate them off our roads should be welcomed.
He did indeed. I had some letters published in the press at the time pointing out that he was a ****. 'Hog
