I just got a new machine which comes with a 17" TFT monitor. But while the
new machine works with my old crt (as I want it to) the old machine doesn't
like the TFT. ANyone know of an adatpr that works this way?

What video card in the old machine? Or if it's onboard, the motherboard specs
will tell you what the chipset is.

I recently had to replace my 17" CRT and went for a TFT.

I had to **** about with the resolution settings and refresh rate to get it
    to work.

You need to reset the resolution / refresh to work with the new monitor.
Setting to 800x600 at 60Hz using the old monitor, then plug in the new one
should work. you can then adjust as required.

Go for a hat trick and explain why it reboots after loading or trying to
    load mups.sys

Im assuming that this machine has SP2?

What make of machie is it? Chaces are that an update of the BIOS will fix
    the problem....

Gimme a call if youre still having hassle (that is if youve still got my
    phone number...)

Cheers, I'm not sure if I have. I think it might be academic because after
reseating the ram I may well just have killed it.

    Hooray!

This seems to be quite a common issue. Couple of possible fixes:

    1) Go to BIOS and load the basic default settings
    2) Boot from the XP CD and run:
    sfc /scannow
    from the command
    3) Re-install / repair the windows install.
    4) http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#warning2

On the down side, it *might* be linked to the old capacitor failure thing.
Your mobo could be fubar, which given what you've posted about

HTH and I'm not about to break my winning streak.

    Just checking like :)

Right, so you take all cards out, and all memory and you put back the Vid
card and the minmum amount of memory (1 stick unless its a dual channel
    memory setup)

Take the button battery out from the motherboard and leave it out for 5
    minutes. Put it back.

    Does it boot up now?

    Do you get any beeps?...

When you plug the power cable into the machine, do you hear a slight crackle
and see the fan "kick"?.. Its *possible* that the PSU is dead..

If none of these work, and if its a decent make, send the fucker back and
get them to fix it. Chances are theyll ask you to do that lot before they
    take it back anyhow.

Well it's a mystery to me. I connected the PSU with a paper clip to see if
it was working and I got nothing. Then I plugged it back in in frustration
and stabbed the buttong and it worked perfectly. After 3 hours of messing
    around.

    I hate computers.
