  1. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Salad Dodger
    I think that's a very personal question; don't you?

Only 200mm at the long end. Mind you this is increased to 320mm by the 1.6x
focal magnication effect caused by my digital SLR's sensor being smaller
    than a 35mm film frame.

I've got a 1.4x extender too but found I didn't need it at Oulton.

Longer lenses are on my Christmas list - but they're all silly money.

So the 75-300 on Linda's Canon should be plenty, then?

    Heh.
Yes, the 75-300 should be fine. I've got that lens too - it's a bit slow (in
terms of maximum aperture being f/5.6 at the long end) so you'll need to
stick some fairly fast film in (400-800ISO) or hope for a bright sunny day.
You might already know that there's a rule of thumb for knowing the slowest
shutter speed at which you can hand-hold (as opposed to tripod mount) the
    camera at various focal lengths.
    Basically it's shutter-speed = 1/focal length - so at 300mm your
slowest shutter speed might be 1/250th or 1/350th (there not being a
1/300th speed). With practice you can use slower shutter speeds but for
fast moving motorbikes 1/250th or 1/350th is slow enough not to freeze the
wheels/spokes/background but fast enough to give you a fighting chance of
    having a blur-free bike & rider.

I've noticed on some of my side-on bike photos that the back of the bike is
sharp and the front is blurred - which is odd since both the front and back
are at the same focal distance - but this is explained by the front diving
on hard braking - the movement causing the blur is vertical rather than
    horizontal.

What sort of body[1] does Linda have?

Thanks Wik - and a catch-all 'thank-you' to everyone else who has commented
    & encouraged me recently.
I've still got loads to learn but your collective encouragement &
complements are just what I need as a dive headlong into photography for a
living. It beats being EKS - but doesn't pay as well.

    That's a nice camera - I've done a couple of weddings with my mate's EOS50
(my own rather feeble EOS500 becoming my backup body)
Well, if you know your way around it you'll be fine.
I should imagine there are plenty of used long lenses around for it eh?

Why don't you rent out one of the Wing's panniers to a large family of
illegal immigrants and buy a decent digital SLR with the proceeds?

  9. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Bootfall match photography involves taking a leaf out of the pros book
and sitting on your arse next to the goal with a long lens on one camera
and a medium lens on the other, just waiting for a shot. In a decent
match, shots will come, but you use a lot of film and throw a lot away.
Obviously, this is less of a concern these digital days. Thermos flask
is compulsory, as is a crony from the other paper.
Track photography involves getting in and around the action; long lenses
are useful but a desire to become one with the track is important.

You've got the most important thing and all you have to do is develop it
further - you've got the eye for a pic. It's amazing how many folk
    don't.

Much as I hate to intrude upon your little flirtfest here.
I feel obligated to point out that whilst Mr C was swanning
off to the hospital for a quick lie down. Our spanner men were
actually in no small part responsible for ressurecting the bike
to a rideable state that very afternoon.

I can see a rush of orders for *massive* UKRM stickers.

Those tiddly things he's been peddling to date are are *so* last year.

Perhaps on rideouts people can ride in strict order and carry a *humungous*
    letter U, K, R or M each!
On a big rideout we'll go for the full UK.REC.MOTORCYCLES

... or if Ginge is with present...

    An extremely admirable feat.

BTW, if you'd like an even greater challenge - I've got a battered old cm125
in boxes all over the garage floor....;o)

  20. Now, if I had a garage, I'd bite your arm off with an
offer like that. But havne't got a garage, and justifying
rebuilding a cm125 on the kitchen floor might be tricky...
