Do you always get a reminder and has everyone who's had one recently
got the one that advises you to do it online (and provides the code to
    do this) ?

I had one for the car in December, very easy no probs - but nothing so
far for the bike (which expires at the end of this month).

Now this obviously wouldn't be an issue normally... but the V5 for the
bike was thrown away (not by me) very shortly after it turned up and I
was rather hoping for the reminder from the DVLA that meant I wouldn't
    need it :-\

Got one for the bike yesterday but haven't looked at it closely
enough yet. I'll check when I get home later.

I see a trip to the Post Office in your future.

I had one for the bike at the same time as the car (a bad month) and tried
to do both on line. Car was fine but I couldn't buy tax for the bike as it
said it couldn't verify my insurance details. I insure the bike through
    Bennetts.

I got my reminder last week and renewed at about 4am on the 15th
(couldn't sleep) but the reference number on the yellow section wasn't
there so I had to get the document reference from the V5. Sorry!

I've never had a reference number on the yellow section so always use the V5.
Is it some magic writing that can only be seen by the light of a full moon?

They claim to have e-enabled tax disc renewal, but it doesn't
always work, especially with older vehicles. I spent about an
hour trying and failing to renew my bike's tax online, and then
rang them. They told me to go to the Post Office.

The hilight was when I entered its registration, and the site
told me (correctly) that it's a black Suzuki GS550. The next
screen then said they had no record of that vehicle.

My renewal notice doesn't mention on-line at all. I suspect for
the very same reason. It won't help that my InsCo is changing
four days before the tax is due anyway.
