Tax/Insurance docs question

When purchasing a new vehicle, you (irritatingly) need to present evidence
that you've got insurance before a tax disc can be issued.

Is a faxed copy of a cover note acceptable in these situations, or does the
    "original"[1] need to be shown?

[1] somewhat academic, given that most insurers laser-print their
    documentation these days

If it's *brand* new, IME (that is once) it comes pre taxed
Last time I tried, they weren't interested. Had to be original (either
certificate or cover note). It was some time back, though

Last time I bought brand new, the tax was provided but I had to prove it was
insured for them to provide the tax - my insco, iirc, faxed a copy of the
cover note through a few days before I collected and posted the cover note
to the dealer, which arrived on the day of collection and all was fine - it
seemed to be more a formality to cover the dealer's back than the sort of
checks they do when you go to the PO....

It shouldn't be too difficult to prove the vehicle is insured anyway - if
you are changing the policy or taking out a new one then just get the insco
to send a post-dated covernote beginning from the day of collection. Not
that much of a hassle, really.

When I got the Megane last year they needed the original cover sheet - but
that was for proof of insurance and not for anything to do with tax as far
    as I'm aware.

Who still uses covernotes? I'm with MD for the bike and they've never
used covernotes (the docs have always come next day or day after), and
the cage insurers have been the same.

As said, most of it is just laser printed stuff, so why faff with a
    covernote?

I would assume that brokers issue covernotes still as the 'proper'
documentation has to come from the insco, not the broker. Or something.

Direct Line insures me, and yes, they just send the full documentation set
out, and don't bother with cover notes.

    *bzzzzt*

The question must be answerable with either "yes" or "no".

Does it have four road wheels?

Christofire emerged from their own little world to say
I just arranged car cover through Hasting's Peoples Choice division.
Together with the expected hard copy of the proposal and request for proof
of no claims they sent a laser printed cover note, valid for 30 days. Last
time I saw a cover note was 2000 when I bought the current car.

The pukka docs will be sent as soon as I send back a signed copy of the
    proposal and proof of NCB.

When I brought the K5 they were happy with a fax copy although this
needed approval by the manager first. I'm guessing it depends on the
    dealer.

  18. In uk.rec.motorcycles, simonk amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
Do it online. All you need is your policy number.
