Is there an exemption from vehicle excise duty for classic bikes and if
    so, what is the criteria?
DVLA web-site gives little info. that can easily be found.

Bantam was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
Short answer (which I really should put into the FAQ):

If it's been _built_ before 1/1/1973 and you can prove it to the DVLA,
you can get the taxation class changed to historic and get your tax
disc free from the Post Office. You still have to carry the disc
    though.

  3. Date of manufacture (note: not original registration) of the bike must
be earlier than 1 January 1973.
