Tanks and seats

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by William Grainger, Jan 12, 2004.

  1. Two questions:

    1) There is a tiny (5p sized) "dug out" bit on the tank
of Claire's ZXR, where my jacket buckle has "dug in".
    Just above where the tank protector is. The tank isn't metal;
seems fibry. Although some black gaffer tape would clearly
be the ratbike way forward, I was looking for a more
pleasent solution. Is it a respray job? Or is there
some other thing I can do? Any advice...

    2) One of the seams of the turbo's seat has split. Is
there a way of fixing this up without gaffer tape, or
is it a new seat job? Again, all options considered...

The pillion pad on the 'blade got a small tear in it, not the seam,
but this might work for you - I held the bits of covering together and
put a thin line of superglue along it, holding it together until it
set. Then, I sanded down the glue when it was dry, and then coloured
it in with waterproof marker. It looks good enough to me. But it might
not be any use to you on a seam.

Might be an idea to do that, and if you can find a piece of flexible
plastic (such as the sort of thing that you often get in packs with shirts
to keep the collar in shape) stuck that on the inside first, so that it
bridges the seam. Glue the edges of the seam and put a bit on the plastic
(may need to rough it up) so that it holds it together by more than the
    edges.

Chemical metal, gobbed into it, sanded down when set, then painted with a
    touch up pen?

actually, I did do something like this, but I used a bit of plastic
cut from the ring-things that hold 4-packs of beer together (is there
an official name for these things?).

[1] This isn't really a name for them, but it sounds better than
    "bindings"... HTH.

Don't understand. Not metal? I think it is.
There's several specialists who recover motorcycles seats.

  9. Doesn't seem to be in the 'ole. It's not a leaking
hole btw. But it doesn't look like metal. I shall
take a pic tonight to explain what I mean...
    Any names?

My 1996 Italian-built Yamaha SZR660 had a plastic tank. HTH.

More than a couple. Triumph's have had plastic tanks for much longer
    than that.
    Indeed it does.

Plastic cover over the tank and air box maybe? My FZR was like that
    except the cover was alloy.

  13. This is a Jap import. I'm not sure on what's grey/parallel/whatever but
this is a Jap version. Clock in km, lights on all the time.

  14. Could be.

Looking inside the tank is clearly metal, so this is looking
    favorite at the minute.

  15. A pic in the dark of a black bike, that ought to help a lot ;o)

Says she, who *is* grateful for you trying to fix it, but wishes you
hadn't had to in the first place.

Why not, my FZR was a 400 grey import from Japan so a very similar
    bike.

  20. Wrong - the legislation way pre-dates that. In fact, it was the
home-made fibreglass tanks that people used to stick on Tritons and
    other ShiteOldBritAbortions that did it.

And some people used to make up their glassfibre tanks with an initial
    layer of Bacofoil.
