tankbag repair ?

Discussion in 'Bay Area Bikers' started by Rob Kleinschmidt, Feb 11, 2004.

  1. Anybody had any luck lately getting a tankbag repaired ?
(S.F. bay area or by mail)

In the past, I've sent my Multivario bag to Bob Weiss, but
he's no longer in the repair business, and my bag's in need
    of a new map window.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

I don't know about a map window, but I've had seams and zippers on soft
luggage repaired by Narain's in Berkeley. But that was a while ago.
Last time I had work done was probably 1998. They were located on San
Pablo near Gilman by REI. Anyone know if they're still there?

  4. You also might call a couple of camping/outdoor adventure stores. They
might have names of outdoor-gear repair type people. Possibly similar
    skills involved.

Duct tape and a freezer Ziploc bag. Send it to me with $30 cash and I'll
fix it. Oh, and you have to pay return postage also.

  7. Thanks Sunny

I may work up the nerve to take a shot at it, though my few sewing
repairs usually look like they've been done by a chimp.

More of that Texas lingo. What she really means, in our northern tongue is
"owl". The talons of the owl are used to pierce the leather and then clasp
it together for sewing. Saw whets are the preferred owl to use in leather
restoration of shoes, purses, jackets, etc. Tack repair calls for the
heavier quality leather and the need for a larger and stronger owl, usually
the Barred and Great Horned. The feathers can also be used for decoration
    if the owl is uncooperative.

Go for it. Nobody else should get close enough to your tank bag to be
able to criticize your needlework. If the job holds together, you've
done your job. If you want the perfection of machine stitching, buy a
    new bag.

  11. I 'repaired' my Multivario by getting a RKA. never looked back, I much
prefer the design. my multivario was suffering from 'shot elastics' on
the front clips. I hated how tall it was. I got the 16L expandable RKA
bag (www.rka-luggage.com), made right in Healdsburg, btw... For normal
daily kicking around town, its in its low profile state where its only
about 3" thick. If I'm traveling, it expands to a generous 16L, and
holds all kinda stuff. Very nicely made. great attachment system, much
more secure than the Multivario was in crosswinds. Also, the RKA map
window holds a 8.5x11 sheet (barely), vs the long narrow Multivario...
