i'm thinking magnetic with map holder.
expandable would be nice, but i would like to have an inside dimension
of around 9x12x3, to allow me to put in A-size papers/reports,
wallet, sunglasses, cell phone, office keys, hearing protector bag,
    etc..

anyone out there tried the http://www.k-drive.com/7Nomad Tankbag.htm
or knows where to try one in the bay area?

i'm also looking at some additional luggage for a round trip to
seattle in july. givi is nice, but most of the time i won't need that
much storage, and am tempted to just bungee on a soft carry-on
    suitcase ...

thanks in advance for advice on this,

  2. check out RKA Luggage. they are in Healdsburg, but many SF Bay Area MC
dealers carry their stuff. they make great tank bags as well as soft
luggage. The 16L expandable 'supersport' tankbag sounds like it would be
perfect for you. expanded, its more like 9x12x9" so you can have your 3"
of regular stuff, plus room for a full size 35mm camera, a large water
bottle, a toilet kit, etc when you are on long road trips...

I have one, it's 4 years old. The map window is in bad shape and all the
zippers are fucked. It did stay attached to the SV after I bounced off
the SUV that cut me off.

  5. You might want to look at gluing/duct-taping a small steel plate onto
the underside of the fairing, because most good-sized tankbags would
    extend onto the fairing area.
Ferenc, you commute. TRUST ME, you want a full topcase. It is the
commuter's dream-tool. Waterproof, large, and convenient. You can
even do grocery shopping on the way home (except for eggs, eggs don't
    work so well).

Never had a problem with 'em, but I'm about 1/2 mile from the store.

i've had problems bringing home (moraga) fruit from the berkeley bown
in my cruiser's tourmaster tailbag - not sure what to expect on the
vstrom, but it sure handles the bumps on fish ranch a lot better!

    take care,

I swear by my Givi. It is the two-wheeled equivalent of a lockable
trunk. I never use the tank bag anymore. And you're right about the
eggs -- learned that the hard way. Now, I take the car or the bus
    when I'm shopping for those.

The roads are better in NorCal. Between culverts and speedbumps in
San Diego, the eggs don't stand a chance here.
