    Hi,

    Ask a silly question...

I'm about to look at a bike tomorrow which has stick on tank protectors -
which I think look crap (look like a very thin lobster has gone splat.

I presume that they come off without much hassle? I know I can use battery
acid to remove them, but I'd rather not - best alternate option?

Bum, I was going to say that. It seems to be a long time since we had
that kind of question on here.

"Battery acid"? Do you really want to take the paint off too?

It's only a sticker, FFS. Peel it off, then us a solvent to remove
    any residual glue.

Hair dryer to heat the glue and make it easy to remove. Then WD40 to
take the rest of the glue off.

    Champ says...
    Not always a good idea.

When I was removing the Thunderace logo[1] from a replacement genuine
Yamaha panel I have, the paint came off in bloody great sheets with the
sticker. Now I have a panel that needs a total respray, not just a small
    localised repair.

Apparently Yamaha don't actually paint Black T/Ace panels as such, they
just use a tinted metallic lacquer over bare black plastic panels.

[1] It needed a small plastic-welding repair in the area where the logo
    was
