T120 questions

  1. Hi
    I´ve just bought a 68´ T120. It´s imported from Sweden to Denmark. I don´t
know much about english classics, so I have a few questiones. The way the
framenumber is made and situated on the frame looks a little bits suspicius
(I think). The framenumber is stamped on a piece of steel with Triumph logo,
but the steel"plate" welded on the frame - Is this the normal Triumph way of
    doing it?

I´ve looked in a few manuals - how do I find out if it is a 6V og 12V
    machine?

    sincerely yours,
    Ivan, Denmark

    Not necessarily.
The 12v Jawa 350 had (blown) 6v bulbs in the indicators.
Counting the battery cells might be better, but some bitzas are bigger
    horrors stories than others.

  4. Hi
First of all, thanks for all your answers!

The "problem" is, that I bought this machine from a person who apparently
hasn´t got any machanically knowledge at all. Myself I am both a skilled
worker in machine work and mechanical+chemical engineer. I have some
experience with both motorcycles and cars but the old english machines are a
    new thing to me.

The guy I bouhgt it from had made some restorations without succeding. -If
you´re wery lucky you may start it, but it runs very poorly. He has put on a
12V battery - maybe its correct - or not ;-).

I thougt it was possible to prove this due to the framenumber.........

I can´t use a multimeter as the motor doesn´t run. I´m also a little bit
worried running the machine if the former owner has messed it up. Therfore
my thinking was, to start with the basics e.g. gasoline all right, ignition,
    voltage, carburettors, etc.

    No you can't
    The possible alternators fitted are
    6volt 3 wire = 6volt
    6volt 3 wire with GB/GY wires joined = 12 volt
    12volt 2 wire= 12 volt
    12volt 3 wire = 3 phase 12volt

    snip 1968 Triumph.
1968 should be 12V. I think the regulator on these was a Zener diode,
which was mounted either underneath the bottom fork yoke, or at the
front of the frame. It will be mounted on an aluminium heatsink which
will have a lot of fins.
Anything could have been changed in 40 years, so do not rely on what the
    frame number is.
Yes, clean out carburettors thoroughly for a start, change oil, check
valve clearances, check all ignition leads/points for corrosion, check
ignition timing etc. Once it is turning over, do a compression test.
Once it has had a service, then it should work, unless there is a lot of
    engine wear.

There is a lot of info on the web about old Triumphs, and many places
selling new improved parts to make them more reliable.
